It all started last week when a trailer mobo was rescued well out to sea from Fremantle. (There is a lot of deail info not given in this story) rescue people found 2 guys in trouble totally inept at boat management and apparently no reason to be out so far. They must have alerted the police, who discovered they had only recently arrived and bought the boat recently paying with cash. Clever police then tracked down shipping arrivals to identify a bulk carrier coming through the area at the time. It had come from South America. Met the ship and found on board hundreds of kilograms of drugs. It is not clear if boaties were charged with drug importation. I hope so, but if not I imagine their friends (masters) will give them a hard time for stupidity. ol'will

I've heard stories that indicate that these things are handled with a good deal more competence around at least one of the Cornish fishing harbours.

Many years ago as part of a Beaujolais run I drove my 6M RIB into Folkestone harbour in a full gale with breaking waves going into the harbour. As I had rather a lot of wine on the boat I made a customs declaration and reported my arrival over the VHF whilst my two passengers were readying the trailer and generally sorting ourselves out. Two customs officers arrived in their van to see three people dressed in drysuits with lots of boxes wrapped in clingfilm scraped down into a small boat supposedly arrived when ports were closed and ferries halted to say they were surprised was an understatement and even more so when I confirmed we had arrived from France. I suppose they wouldn't be so surprised today. The bastards made me pay duty on the wine.
