A Simple Vhf Question

Re: Another Simple Vhf Question

The UK does not issue MMSI numbers to EPIRBs alone, as they don't need them, the UK registry operates on the HEX ID, a number built into the device in production.

If your boat is already equipped with DSC equipment and has an MMSI number then you can put it into your beacon.

Re: Another Simple Vhf Question

Well the RYA syllabus is wrong then coz I got marked down for answering that you must inform the RCA about an EPIRB. I was told that it should be the MCA!!!

Re: Another Simple Vhf Question

Then Mike why did you issue me with one? Mind you, I can't remember now whether I asked for one, for a DSC set I was about to buy. I have bought one now, although it's not yet fitted, I need to do the upgrade. Do you know anywhere in Majorca I could do it?

The place to go for information is here

http://www.radio.gov.uk/topics/maritime/maritime-index.htm

You can get the forms, read the newsletters and if you're in a particular rush click on the link to the Radio Licensing Centre and you can even apply on-line (depending on your browser).

Re: Another Simple Vhf Question

Taking off my "work hat" for a minute. I have complete sympathy for their approach, although it isn't (as far as I'm aware) mandatory to register with the EPIRB Registry it is pretty pointless not to do so.

Our approach is to ensure that all legally licensed (at least) EPIRBs do appear on the Register. To my mind it is as important as MARS.

Re: Another Simple Vhf Question

Oh I think I made my position clear!! :-)

If I issued you with one that means that you either:

Told me that you had or were about to get DSC or

You convinced me that you needed it on on safety grounds.

And make sure you put enough

postage on the application form! It could be really embarassing if you didn't put enough stamps on the envelope and then rang RCA 3 weeks later to complain that you hadn't had your licence then Mike Martin gets involved to sort out with an emergency rushed through one to then be called three weeks later to be told that your original application has arrived without enough postage 6 weeks after you posted it. Ahem, can't imagine anyone being so daft but just in case!!!

PS Thanks Mike

Its now 37 posts at the last count.

You see us stinkies are very clever, you see we can turn a simple question into quite a compliacated one. Anything after that is beyond us.!!!!!!!!

Or maybe we are completely thick!!!!!
