Another Simple Vhf Question

When you purchase an EPIRB for use on your vessel, should you register the EPIRB serial number with the Radio Communications Agency or MCA?

Re: Another Simple Vhf Question

It must be registered with the Radio lot, they will then issue an MMSI number and inform Falmouth MCA. They will also give you a sticker for it and a sticker for the boat, with it's MMSI and other details. The thing then has to be programmed with it's MMSI number. I think, thats nhow I remember it anyway.

YES
a tender might lead to a NO but the reference to the mother vessel means that it is being used in the tender of the mother vessel for whom the licence is issued and therefore it sort of becomes the vessel. Obviously the radio licence has to be issued to the mother vessel and include the handheld for the above.
On the other hand...................

Well you are all too brainy, and so i must be as thick as mince!!!

Yes, a portable radio being used in a tender is covered by a licence for a fixed set in the mother ship.
The second question that wakeup asked about who do you register an Epirb with , the answer is ......The Coastguard, AND NOT the Radio Communications Agency.

SORRY ccscott49 you got it WRONG....

Cheers

Why then did I have to register it with the RCA, to get an MMSI number to be programmed in by the supplier, the RCA then forwarded it, my callsign and the serial number to the MCA? Answer me that one please, oh wise one. I have never registered my EPIRB with the MCA, but they have all my details, strange eh? I think we need Mike Martin for this one.

Yes I'd like to hear Mike Martin's response to this because like Alistair i was told this was the case on a recent VHF course and I dropped a mark because I put RCA over MCA!!! When logic tells me that I'm right and Colin's experience also tells me I am right.

That question appeared on my test paper at the weekend, i answered it with the coastguard which i was told was right.

This is an extract from the RYA VHF radio training book no. G22/02 page18
Titled Emergency Radio Equipment.....

"A 406MHz EPIRB has been designed with an integral miniture GPS which transmits current position and further enhances its livesaving capabilities. When the beacon is activated in an emergency the positional information is incorporated into the distress message it transmits. GPS EPRIBs can fix the position to within 25 metres, a great improvement in accuracy.
When installing a 406MHz EPIRB it is essential to inform the Coastguard of the beacon identity and details of the craft in which it is fitted."

I think you answered it in your reply; " the RCA then forwarded it, my callsign and the serial number to the MCA" Which roughly translates to it being registered to the MCA!!

Who is Mike Martin?

I am not here to critise, only to give the answer to the question that i set earlier in the week.

Cheers

Alistair..

Mike is the boss of the RCA aero/maritime etc. division. I see your point, my EPIRB doesn't have a GPS in it, most don't, only the newer (expensive) ones do. so they are wrong about that aswell. Yes, of course it was registered with the MCA, but not by me, but it was also licenced and registered with the RCA, by law, as it's on my licence and they issued the MMSI, I suppose the question is a little ambiguous. Might be worth letting the RYA know that.
