A significant first..

I read this several years ago. The bit where he sets off to go from Kamchatka(?) around the top of Russia and towards Norway was terrifying to read, never mind contemplate! Things have no doubt moved on.Screenshot_20251017_214336_Chrome.jpg

The Northern Sea Route has operated for many years; at least since the 80s. A former colleague (Terence Armstrong) used to maintain documentation and statistics about it in Soviet days (no doubt various spooks found his research of interest!). In those days icebreakers were used to clear a path for ordinary ships, but these days the need for that has become less; the prevalent ice drift is from Siberia to the Canadian Archipelago, so the Siberian coast has less ice, and with global warming, that has become no ice in many years.

Ditto.

...and I read it with similar mixed feelings to the ones when seeing this story.

At least there are some upsides.

The Tilman accounts are amazing - a view into a previous era. I keep a picture of Tilman on my boat to remind me not to make crazy decisions and that anything I might be enduring is unlikely to be as bad as Tilman and his crews went through!

Fifteen or so years ago I moved in to a house and found a previous owner had left a pile of books in the loft. Amongst them was the collected Tilman, 8 books in one. I was absolutely rivetted and read the whole thing cover to cover as quickly as possible.
I was already somewhat interested in sailing, and had crewed for friends a few times, but I think the chance discovery of that book was one of the factors that propelled me towards boat ownership. Within a few weeks I had bought my first boat (a Wayfarer- and yes, I read Frank Dye too) and a couple of years later, having persuaded my other half, we got our first yacht.
We're now on yacht no.4... and we're ten thousand miles from home... but we haven't got very far north yet. Amazing to read about, but I'm not sure I actually want to do it myself.

Taking advantage of the prospect of increased Global weather changes is an interesting move. If ice melt predictions are correct, that route is not too far in the future as a all year round option.
Quite a few of the potential customers for the shipped products might be underwater though.
Wee snag with the biziniz as usual model.
