Getting someone else to steer is always a good idea.
If it was an 'honest shoreline' at the headland (ie no suprise rocks sticking up unexpectedly, but the water just getting deeper and deeper), I am sure that a sailor with your experience can eyeball your distance off to keep in safe (deep) water.
Regarding the isolated rock. Howabout a quick transit or clearing bearing off a known point for the rock? (You can give one of the other visitors the handbearing compass). Two minutes showing them where you are going on the chart. Make sure the handbearing person is reading the thing properly and tell them to call out if the bearing gets less than/more than whatever is needed to clear the danger. People enjoy this sort of activity for a while.
This is all assuming no Radar.
If you have radar its easy to get distance off the coast - so long as the coast is not flat and you ar not measureing distance off the first bit inland that gives a radar echo!!!
Now a supplimentary:-
What if is gets foggy and you have no Radar? (Not that it does in Scotland of course)
My feelings are that you are in the poo and need to anchor quickly. Get a leadline out and nose into shallow enough water to drop the hook is he only sensible way ahead for me.
I am truly stuffed without an echo-sounder in the fog.
Actually no offence but I usually skip over Claymore / Jxxx posts cause I find Scotlish a pain .... but here we have a post that I feel a lot of sympathy with.
We have all let go in a rush to make a tide window or so overjoyed to be back on boat .... it's let go and damn the torpedoes ....
What woulod I do ?? Well having done it often ... I have to admit .... it's normally OK Guys - yer on now .... stow yer gear, have a butchers round where the gear is .... yep - we HAVE left ... anyone ready for a touch on the helm / beer / wine ....... while I stow my gear etc.......
Quite often SWMBO pops up from cabin from stowing gear - to find boat halfway out of marina .... Oh we've left already ... Yes Darling .... beers are on left in the box .... ??
I usually flit down and press <ON> to get pc up and running .... thats a quick few seconds .... HH GPS comes up with me to deck and I clip on usb cable .... wait for PC to be staedy and then plug in ... switch on GPS. Back to watching her fumble on helm .... then start Seaclear ..... Voila .... each trip to keyboard is probably 20 - 30 secs ..... maybe if unlucky a minute ... she's up there ready to shout at me if things get a bit close etc.
Once I'm up and pc'ing ..... she disapears forward with her glass and sits enjoying the view .....
It's just that being a deep souf englander ... it gets hard to a) read the Scotlish posts, b) sometimes b...y difficult to know what the 'ell yer on about .....
Anyway .... no worries - with TB devolving everything he can to EU - soon we'll all be USE citizens .... (United States of Europe) .... and do we become USE..less then ??
Have a GPS repeater or a handheld at the helm that can show the Highway screen.
Stick in a few waypoints and explain CTE - if to the left of the middle of the road turn gently right etc. Tell them to call you if they go off the highway at any time.
In my experience virtually anyone can cope with helming using this device.
looking at from the insurance companies point of view -
did you conduct a passage plan prior to departure
did you discuss it with those involved in controlling the vessel
were ppl controlling the vessel competant
was the person in command excercising proper care and attention of the insurable risk
was a risk assessment done to take into account the fact than 'all methods of maintnaining a proper lookout and checking navigational requirements' were available and in use
etc etc etc ...... its something that is normally done without thinking - but what happened if one item was overlooked and the insurance co. was involved.
to answer I would retain command and control until danger had been passed and the passage had returned to 'routine cruising' . but there again I am commercially trained and when driving someone elses boat am insensitive to ppls wants/likes/foibles if it would impinge on the safety of the vessel or crew.
