A rebuild thread to keep you all happy for the long winter

By popular demand (1 person), its time to start another rebuild thread.

I guess me being the "popular demand" person, I should thank you for the thread
nice boat, nice wrapping, well done!

big problem with you googler is that a full rebuilt thread by you is done in 20 posts in 1month, that's not fun!
[need to take it slow, check Bouba's threads for ideas maybe :p ]

Next project should be a 70s 70footer from the Med, that would be fun.
😁

cheers

Enjoying this thread! 👍

I have been meaning to get round to get round to doing what would now be a retrospective thread on the work we have done with our Hardy - maybe I will find time during the dark winter months 😉

What an interesting thread and timely too. While we love our new to us Windy we feel that the saloon could be a little brighter and dare I say it more modern (don't tell Mr K though as he might have a fit :D)! The wrap that has been used looks great and the fact that it can be easily undone in the future is also a bonus.

Thinking it might be an option for us on two walls only (no tricky folding / tucking) could you give any info on what you chose, type, colour etc. and any tips on application please.
https://layed.com/products/light-linen-ll433

Thats the stuff…lots of other options colour wise. Application wise is make sure surface is clean and grease free, cut to to rough dimensions but oversized, heat around corners (do a few test runs with smaller bits) and finish with edges a sharp blade

Make that 2 requests then! Dont worry….plenty of drama to go

In the next exciting instalment…..we talk fabrics. Once again, the bed head things where in solid condition, just old fashioned and a bit faded
IMG_4086.jpeg

I have an aversion to upholstery services as its a black art and i don’t understand. What to do…….hit google.

Found a waterbased upholstery fabric paint. The whole water-based thing still confuses me (its a theme) as how can anything stick or soak in without chemicals and VOC’s?

It was cheap enough and nothing to lose so gave it a go Fabric Paint -- Gunmetal

IMG_4088.jpegIMG_4092.jpegIMG_4115.jpeg

Turns out…..its ace! Like a thick emulsion. The trick is spray the fabric with water then paint the damp fabric and work it in with a brush. I did 2 passes and it covered really well. Winter job is a 3rd go in some areas as a little lighter here and there but doubt anyone else would notice

Time for a step change and move away from interior……lets get mechanical

As mentioned before, starboard shaft has vibration. I had to tighten the packing 4 times during the trip so time to investigate. On the lift out before purchasing, i checked the p bracket cutlass bearings and all looked well with minimal play. All 4 blades where present on each prop with no chunks missing. This tells me something but rules out nothing of course. Started with engine alignment. A quick call to the legend that is @volvopaul confirmed these are the later (better) mounts and guidance on how to adjust them.
IMG_3848.jpeg

My assumption was a special and delicate tool……
IMG_3853.jpeg

Turns out not….just a mahoosive pair of grips! (Surprisingly cheap these)

As suspected, the alignment was out with the engine having sagged at the gearbox end. R and D couplings are fitted so i set to adjusting. Access not the best so took a few goes

IMG_4241.jpeg

a quick run showed some improvement for sure but no cigar and leaking stern gland again. Bit more adjustment again but just had a nagging feeling about check alignment using a who knows how old coupling. They have a hard life and i figured if its been like this for at least 6 years…..the coupling could we be “set”

Time to replace it and align more manually. Unfortunately, the shaft wont come up to the flange when the coupling is out as the prop hits the p bracket (i am afloat btw). How do i fill the gap to check alignment? Please step forward 3D printing! Got a local firm to print out a donut using the flange dimensions and hey presto, something more than accurate enough to check with. As it turns out, i was damn close from my previous adjustment but i felt better.
IMG_4248.jpeg

New coupling fitted and another attempt made. Vibrations was loads better and not detectible at anything over in gear tickover. Result! Flying along, not a drip to be seen at speed! Came bsck to tickover…..water streaming in 🙈🙈🙈

Thats all i can do in the water, the packing is all but out of adjustment left and if i was a gambling man, the packing is well knackered. Nothing lost as all the above required but she comes ashore soon to have shafts out, props balanced and see whats what. Cant all go well can it….theres more coming that didnt go well but i dont want to peak too soon. Tune in tomorrow when normal service will be resumed and I’ll do 14 posts on scatter cushions

With the new coupling in , did you do the feeler gauge check on the red bolt head at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock?
You haven’t mentioned it so just thought I’d ask!
Enjoying the thread though - great stuff 👍

That exactly what i did on the old and new. Im pretty sure the old one was “set”. Quite possible as its likely 35 years old. My gut feeling is shaft wear at the stuffing box area, inboard cutlass, maybe props a bit out of balance and of course……stuffing material all expired, now all conspiring together. No point doing just one thing with this, better to just do it all properly (both sides as its out)

Lets start with a quiz! Around the boat there are 240v power sockets. They appeared in pairs. One normal uk type and one 3 prong round pin jobs next to it. This pattern repeated in various places and i figured ok….they fitted for both uk and euro spec. Bit odd. Who here thinks it makes sense both types are indeed 240v?

IMG_3979.jpeg

Now….boat restoration is not new to me and if ive learnt anything its to assume nothing. The round pin jobs are 12v! Random but ok. Time to hit Aliexpress

You are now never more than 6ft away from a usb charger with 12v and 240v source usb options. Very important in 2025. All sockets and usb kit was sub £50. Cant knock the chinese and delivery is better tracked than special delivery!

I also decided to max out the audio. All anyone does is bluetooth or airplay these days so a cheap touchscreen headunit was purchased. I did however purchase 2 x 4 channel amps, 6 speakers and a 12 inch sub. Ive learnt new stuff about audio, bridging, LPF, 2,4,8 ohms etc…. Its very interesting! What i know have is one amp running sub and 2 speakers inside and the other amp running 4 outside speakers (stern seating area and flybridge)
IMG_3045.jpeg

No messing about! 12 inch beast which i made a box for and its under the sofa.

I now have 1200w RMS system (i never knew RMS is the important part) so it is loud and great quality. As a considerate neighbour though, i popped a switch on the outside speaker amp so they can be turned off.

Lastly, lighting. All ceiling spots replaced for led. Aliexpress again and like £1.31 each for full assembly. I also have a love affair with cob LED strips. You can’t see individual LED’s within a cob strip at all which is great

Camera make it look more yellow than it is in reality. Thats todays update. Tomorrow we look at replacing throttles and single engine boat handling thereafter

that's no euro plug on the right P. looks more like Oz mains plug...
I fitted both usb and 24VDC Vimar IDEA stuff on my boat. Had to scratch my head figuring out what to use for directional DC volt, ended up finding a two pin (different dia) socket. Thing is they turn out to be a waste of space, only good for a couple of 24VDC fans which I don't use and a worklight, so good call on ripping and getting usb charging ports everywhere!

still looking for PD bricks that take 24VDC input and output 3A to wire them behind the panel and to the actual vimar usb sockets!
