A really useful weather site?

I think this is a really useful weather site, do you?

To be honest, I don't find the site particularly useful, in comparison with XC and the Met Office. My first reaction was bewilderment at the hundreds (haven't counted but there seem to be) of links.

We rarely undertake passages of more than 24 hours duration and otherwise remain in coastal locations where decent shelter is never more than say 12 hours away. So for us simple forecasting is adequate, coupled with current observations from relevant locations, available online, such as Milford Haven weather.

However there are some very interesting links. I've only just scratched the surface but I particularly like the Europe/Russia/Asia satellite imagery.

I'd be interested to know what weather sites other Bristol Channel forum members use, including the more adventurous types that go further afield than us.

My favourite is www.windfinder.com. As well as the standard 7 day forecast they do a 3 day "Super Forecast" which is taken from a more sophisticated model. I find the super forecast is generally very accurate for the Bristol Channel. I haven't tried it elsewhere.

I also have the Android app on my phone. Free for the standard forecast and loose change for the super forecast.

When in Cardiff I use Windguru for Cold knap. Further afield I use Saunton sands and Sennan cove. Like most of the sites Windguru is based on the GFS model. I just prefer the presentaion. It would be nice to find a local site which is not just computer derived but has human input. Inshore forecasts are OK but need to be interpreted as St Davids is very different from Lydney. Recently, for me, the 1 to 3 day GFS has been pretty good.
I read a quote recently, "as the weather doesn't know what it will do in 5 days, how can we be expected to predict it?"

Me too, although I use the iPhone version. I was reluctant to subscribe again but when they charged the princely sum of £1.50 ish I though oh go on then. Its only money.

Always remember that the free services – Windguru, Windfinder, Passageweather, XCWeatheer, the various Apps ............. are, almost invariably, the same information re-packaged ie the GFS. Some, eg the detailed Windfinder “superforecast” starts with the GFS, adds no more data (as far as I know) then computes on a finer scale. The added value is not great.

Best advice is to use whichever of these you can get most easily in a format that you like. In terms of the information none will be of higher quality than another.

Thanks Frank; good advice as usual. I'll stick to XC and the Met Office. I certainly don't have the time, knowledge and experience to interpret GRIB files and other data.
