Ok folks, I understand that the last answer can be embarrassing, but fear not, for I made this poll anonymous! :D
By the way, the thread is actually inspired by the fact that I was sure to know, but I was wrong... :o

LOL, that count as two admissions among the (so far) 5 unanimous voters, I guess... :D

Btw, I'm sort of surprised by that!
Makes me wonder if I misspelled the thing: AFAIK, the cylinder made of brass (externally) and rubber (internally) which goes inside the shaft bracket, meant to keep the shaft in place but also avoid any metal on metal contact/friction, is called "shaft bushing" in EN - innit...?

PS @ Whitelighter: incidentally, that's one of the things which are very likely to be worn out and in need of replacement, on most used boats with some years of life behind them...

I guess I have as many as Ferretti fitted - so 2????
Hang on, do you mean 2 because you've got 2 shaft brackets?
Mind, my previous explanation was just to be sure that I didn't get the definition wrong.
I didn't tell that shaft bushings are ONLY inside the brackets.
Besides, there are also boats which have more than one bracket for each shaft...

Ops. Coming to think of it, that's another definition I came across in the past.
Which might well be more appropriate, for all I know - and if so, sorry for the confusion.
Anyway, semantic aside, I think we all know what I meant by now... :)

Did I win?
I would think that in your case, yes, you won - though I can't be 100% positive about it, and believe it or not, even your surveyor might not be 100% sure...! But don't ask me why, for the moment.
Regardless, your answer isn't necessarily the right one for all boats. :)

I was so relieved that I'm part of the majority

I didn't realise that a stuffing box gland can contain a Bushing bearing aswell,
googling pictures showed stuffing boxes with or without,
don't know for sure on mine,
voted for 2 on each shaft

This week I asked 2 separate mechanics to quote for changing the cutless / shaft bearings. One quoted for 2 and one quoted for 4. The one that quoted for 4 also wants to replace the stuffing boxes and the other one just wants to re-pack them. Which would you choose???

Ah, cutless bearings. Right.

One on the shaft exit, one in the P bracket x 2shafts so 4

?

Did I win?

Surveyor said cutlessbearings were fine btw - though thanks for the warning
I'd have thought you lost J.
Do you really have a proper bush where the axle exits the hull?
I think you only have a stuffing box there

Cheers
V.
