A Quick Question

After yonks hanging around this forum, I've decided I'd better buy a boat. So, I have a quick question or two I'd like the experts help with:

What boat should I buy?
New or secondhand? (what's all this about surveys, and VAT receipts?)
Should it be diesel or petrol?
One or two engines? (or one or two masts?)
Inboard, outboard, sterndrive or shaft?
Should I antifoul it, and what with?
Where should I keep it?
How much will it cost to run and moor?
Will SWMBO enjoy it and what can I do about this, and what does SWMBO mean?
Should I beach it when I want to go ashore, or buy an tender. If a tender, what type and outboard combination, and should I use davits or snap davits, or pack it away and buy a sooper pump?
What safety equipment do I need, and is there anyone expert who can answer this question for me?
What electronic equipment should I buy?
Should I go on a training course, and which one?
Are there any other questions I should ask?

1. Find one that floats
2. Chose colour wisely white a pain to keep. Pale yellow or blue good. Pink like the ferry’s great.
3. At least 2 engines a 3rd is useful, they fit under the bed!
4. No tender needed just swim. Great way to sober up.

Anyway answer to your question/s

Whatever as long as it floats
How deep is yer wallet( can do, but I find the theodolite leaves marks)
Does it matter as long as it runs( petrol, big fun. Diesel, nah the bores will be glazed)
The more the merrier

Safety equipment, yep a packet of condoms will do fine.
Anything that has lots of buttons and lights with a manual that you need a PHD in electrophysics to understand will be fine.

I'm actually having a rather serious thought about this. Kim has agreed for ages that we should have a FAQ here. Boat buying, things to look for, where to keep it.

A huge task, which is why it never happens.

So, why don't we do it? All together. All those questions I asked have been answered at some point, but impossible to collate.

So, as it's non boating season, when everything goes barmy on here, lets give everyone a focus.

We can do it in weekly installments: first week we decide what the categories are, mainly outlined in the 'quick' question I asked, but there are several to add (eg keeping a boat in south of france, towing, etc etc)

Then each week we take one category and everyone wades in with answers.

I'll volunteer to collate, and by the end of the winter we'll have one of the most comprehensive FAQ's known to boating. Then Kim can put them in a permanent home which can be updated periodically

What does everyone think?

Billiate idea, /forums/images/icons/smile.gif /forums/images/icons/wink.gifgo for it. keep everyone busy, why not do a one to do and a one not to do, comic version. there are enough good story tellers on here, Kim mite even use some of it in the mags! IMHO OK./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I think you really are mad! But hey. Only prob I can see is that you need to ask a number of questions before you can answer the original question. As in "what boat should I buy?" Depends doesn't it. No good suggesting a full on speed machine stonking great engines ultra deep vee if you only want to potter on the non tidal rivers.

So what your going to need is a question page and the answer you give points youin the direction of the next. sort of leading answers. Things like safety equip can be lifted from the various manuals etc, depending on size of boat type of use and such like.Mammoth task if you ask me. Maybe a "pointers page" where the basics can be answered. Things like who to contact for training and stuff like that. Could be a good money spinner for IPC as thery could charge for the ads etc. Also a mention of the Seacheck service by RNLI would be a good idea.

If your not mad now, which I doubt, you will be by the end of it.

No, quite easy really. Just look at any of the general questions asked in the past. It soon gets distilled down into basics. It's weeding out the 30 to 300 posts in reply to the ones that mean something.

If I asked you how to use trim tabs, I bet you could answer in less than 3 sentences. Not a full answer, but all a newcomer needed?

If I asked you the difference between outdrive and shaft. 3 sentences?

Difference between planing, semi-displacement and displacement. 3 sentences?

Just basics. Once we've got that, people might have the enthusiasm to write pieces in detail on specifics. That would need some investment and thought by ybw.com, on a way to manage the content, and a far better search engine. But its a start!

Look back on all the posts. There are very few disagreements on the basic things. We can get complicated very easily, just let the forumites loose.

Forget the difficulties, concentrate on basics first, and worry about things that people disagree on later. OK, there has to be a degree of content and editorial control.

Think your going to have to start by breaking it down into four or five main headings ie Boat types, Engines/Drives, Training/safety etc.
Although once you start taking yachts into account it'll start getting seriously complicated. Maybe worth having the same sort of thing on Scuttlebut as well.

Are you tellling me I can't do this?
Cut this down to manageable sizes. Do a section each week. Sections can be chopped into ..sections

Doesn't have to get yachtie unitl it's advanced and people are contributing

First question, is it for Boats or Yachts?.
Anything to do with YACHTS count me out, we will finish up with only questions and answers on how to polish the £100.000 yachts.

First question should be what condoms are best and because a lot of us are married, how long will they keep ?

seriously, the questions need to be very clear and focused.

I'm in only if boating and not raggie. let the raggies do it themselves. there are to many differences to include at this stage both types.

also suggest we limit the answers to boats between XX ft and YY ft

my suggestion is 25ft to 45ft

Can be done.

If everyone keeps thinking of problems, it'll never be done. So, ignore "problems", solve them as we go along.

Each "short and to the point" answer should also have attached, a list of links relating to that subject for further indepth research. Everyone would appreciate a list of links that is directly related to the question they're trying to find an answer to.

Brendan, welcome to the forum /forums/images/icons/wink.gif You will find it most helpful here, unfortunately it is very serious, and you should be aware of making jokes, or even light hearted banter. All members have six months in which to achieve yachtmaster status, if you fail to achieve this then obviously boating is not for you. We have a couple of retired Admirals on here who clearly know everything, they do have off days so beware!

Well welcome aboard, always nice to see fresh 'type' faces, I am sure that if you just keep quiet and look over the winter months, you will gain all knowledge required in order to purchase and use the tender succesfully, and more importantly safely.

I think its a good idea but i suugest that NO work is done on the answers until the Sections have been sorted out - in fact if we can get the
