A question

Jfm,
Perhaps the choice of the word tighter was unfortunate, but the question if fact is perfectly genuine, do motorboaters devote more money to their hobby than the average sailor?.

If you want me to write about how I dropped my cocktail shaker into the marina, quite happy to write about that.

If you wish to complain about what I post, then please contact the forum moderator, (in actual fact do we have one?).

Are yachtsmen / sailors 'tighter' more careful with their money that those of us who own motorboats?

Avoiding the argument, having done both I think any boat ownership involves spending money. Yots / mobos just spend money on different things is all.

We spend on gadgets, fuel, mooring etc

They spend on gadgets, sails and rigging, mooring etc

The debate has been on here before with all sides claiming the other is more expensive, but I suspect we all spend just a bit more than we'd really want to.

that's boats ;)

You obviously don't mix with the same moboers I do ;)

Yeah, OK leaving aside Kwaka, who is probably a raggie in disguise & the Major who is simply of Scottish (or Manx?) descent. I would say that there are big & small spenders on both sides. I would class myself a budget boater.

But there are many who trail sport boats to the sea/ lakes on a shoestring just as there are those who sail secondhand dinghies. At the other end of the scale are those who use a tank full of juice every week without a care and those who have paid crew to run thier yachts for them.

FWIW, one of the Yarmouth harbourmasters (Bryn) once told me that it was always the yotties who tried to sneak in late at night and disappear early in the morning without paying harbour dues but he always caught them, even if they were halfway down the Needles Channel, thanks to the fast dories they had
