That's now; all of IndoChina was regarded as being tributary to China in most parts of the past, and the degree of autonomy varied according to the strength of the empire. It only really became separated from China in the 19th century; before that the various kingdoms were regarded as tributary states by the Chinese.

I did cheat - the stone stock at ground level is original, but of course, what's hanging over it is a modern replica!
