A new sport - \"Extreme Varnishing\" ?

So there was I, holding the tarp off the gunnel in the face of a F6 or F7 whilst putting the base soaking coat of Varnish onto bare sanded wood, wedging myself under the frame of the cover and with my face dangerously close to the jam-jar, breathing in turpentine fumes, wondering "this could be a new sport - Extreme varnishing" like extreme ironing only with a far greater chance of getting as high as a kite, and falling 8 feet to the concrete and ending up in casualty"!

Has anyone else tried to paint their boat in conditions which only the insane would attempt?

Have you tried it whilst listening to Parky's Big band show on the radio and not being arsed to change stations.

It's murder, I tell you!

Tried it frequently over the past few weeks , gave up each time /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif , and why is it that whenever the weather is good enough to paint or even work on the boats , I have something else that I have no choice but to do instead /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I like the idea though , extreme painting and varnishing , the new sport for the downtrodden masses /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My nearest experience to this was extreme antifouling by my labrador. An old boy was lying on his back with a roller in his hand painting on antifouling, my dog was looking for me and walked under this boat and as he went under the keel his back got covered with a 4inch strip of wet paint about 18inches long. The amazed old boy watched as the dog then walked straight through his paint tray!!!

There are even times when I wish I was not in Cyprus but back in the UK - like now when I am trying to varnish bits of the boat in a temperature of 34 deg C in the shade. Have removed all the movable bits back to the house and although all in-between-coats sanding is done outside, have taken over the kitchen in the early morning and evening for varnishing to avoid the wind and dust. Am using an American varnish supposed to be suitable for the med and caribbean, Pettits' Z-Spar 1015 Captain's Varnish, thinned (as recommended) with 10% Z-Spar T-11 Brush-Flo Thinner. Problem is that after 8 coats I am still getting what seems to be a faint orange-peel finish - anyone any bright(work) ideas on how to get that glass-like finish? Varnish, thinner and brushes purchased new one week ago - and chandler had them delivered only in May. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Having a lift keeler, antifouling the bald spot is an annual activity. Shuffling under the trailer, roller in hand trying to reach that awkward spot, somehow the tray ends up just where you lay your head.

Have stopped short of using the two handed scraper at the end of the season as there is too much canvas showing through already.

Luxury, i once varnished the deck of my YW DB and she glowed like a piano, five minutes later an idiot drove past at speed and kicked up a cloud of dust so it went very non slip, i had to do it again and was not best pleased.
Actually exteme varnishishing sounds more enjoyable than the new sport of indoor rowing.

I gave up! After two attempts dicing showers, and getting hit pretty badly, I have now taken the concious decision to drink Adnams in the cockpit and watch others extreme varnishing attempts. So for the moment I am a spectator,

Roach's raised topsides looking rather scruffy - and when I do get a good spell of sun, now that she is in the water, varnishing will to be done on a springy finger pontoon or a spongy tender!

I can only sympathise. This summer has not been the best for tarting up the brightowork. This coming winter (is it here already I ask!) I shall be laying Mariposa up in a shed out of the elements. Thanks to Global Warming it shouldn't get too cold for a spot of painting and varnishing.

Given the usual English Spring weather I rarely manage more than two coats, hastily applied between showers and gales. I then say "I'll put more on during the season" and even convince myself I'll make a better job of it in a dust-free environment. Of course I never get round to it and have to be thankful for excellent Epifanes varnish, which lets me get away with it.

Tom,

Used to use foam brushes all the time when I was in the UK, but no-one has heard of them in Cyprus - anything to do with paintwork here is strictly building trade - all the local boats use domestic white paint, usually a locally produced Sadolin derivitative. I was hoping that there would be some varnishing guru out there with all the answers concerning temperature/humidity etc. Anyway, thanks for the response.

Regards,

Peter

I also sympathise with you. In Melbourne we are frequently sent cool [20 deg] but sunny days during winter which are just perfect for varnishing, painting or even sailing!

I have done extreme deck painting while sailing from Campbeltown to Port Ellen. It was a nice sunny day so perhaps that doesn't count.

Replacing the heads seacock, on the slip, rising tide. Me safe inside doing all "responsible" stuff like sealants etc. My wife, crouched outside, holding seacock and bolts in place while the tide rose to her middle.

Still have the same wife and the same boat.

You are lucky she didn't make you plug the hole with some suitably shaped object that you might have had about your person.

...do the last coat with a foam brush!

I've just discovered what a joy and a treasure these foam brushes are - fantastic!

Also tried to varnish again tonight in the dark, but gave up as I nearly fell off the ladder, and nearly varnished the teak deck by accident.
