A Marriage at Sea - Maurice and Maralyn

I picked up a copy at the "book exchange" shelf in Mallaig marina a couple of years ago.

A bit different to many sailing accounts - it's not just about the sailing. I enjoyed it.

I think it was published under the title Maurice and Maralyn in the UK, and I'm reading it under the US title - I've amended the thread title.

I think I've read two first hand accounts of the Baileys incredible survival story one was excellent. I have two family birthdays coming up, is this likely to appeal to Wives and Daughters? (In the spirit of buying people the book you want them to read.)

The book is about their survival story, but it's also very much about the relationship between a very complex, self-centered, driven, shy, awkward, somewhat mean spirited man, and his saviour wife.

I hadn’t twigged that the book was about the Baileys.

I read 117 days 46 years ago. My cousin very thoughtfully gave me a copy to read as I was heading off to do a transatlantic trip from Fort Lauderdale to Kos 😂

I remember Yot Grot; I bought some bits and pieces there back in the day. I had no idea that that was them.

Almost every book I buy at the second hand shop has "international best seller" and something like "a dazzling book" on the front cover. I wonder how much people get paid for this these days. A pal at university who was reading English got onto the free book circuit but his pay for review in those days was simply a free copy of the book itself.

You twigged me. I got a slightly out of date turtle steak as payment for my review.

You are in good company with your positive review. It was the overall winner of the Golden Nero Book Awards 2024 and was one of Barack Obama’s top reads for Summer 2025. Sophie Elmhirst is my brother in law’s sister in law, so I read it soon after its release. Loyalties aside, I really enjoyed it.
