some villainous characters use bots to search for URLs, so it's also an attempt to circumvent their systems by replacing an alphanumeric by a word. e.g.

@ AT
& ampersand
. dot

I have a view that if villains are really that concerned to collect addresses, they run up a bit of code to substitute @ for AT.
