A long weekend on the boat.

Beautiful pics H. What are you using this week?

My Canon 600D with a new Canon 70-300mm L lens, UV filter and circular polarizing filter to improve colour saturation a bit and reduce some of the reflections. Very pleased with it. On the move shots are always a bit point and shoot especially when the boat is moving around but land based stuff is easier. I've re-discovered my love of photography recently. I'm not technical by any stretch, I just see an image and pull the trigger.

Henry :)

Thanks Henry. We rediscovered photography on Safari's in Africa, and really like the Canon stuff. Am really looking forward to getting some longer trips under our belts next season, having missed most of this with the sale and purchase process, and trying out some photography in the Bristol Channel.

Day 6 of our long weekend

what a difference a few days make. Wind guru was spot on today. Strong winds and rain first thing, then a shift from South West to Westerlies and a drop in wind strength. Sunshine was a bonus !

The morning spent in Salcombe - just how much shopping do girls need to do? I had a wander around some of the more out of the way areas that we had discovered after dinner and a light brunch to grab internet (which didn't work !). By mid afternoon we were ready to cast off, we might pop back in on the way back for a couple of days, we shall see how things go.

There was still some residual swell from the south but nothing like a couple of days ago. A steady 20 knots saw us make the trip to Plymouth without too much fuss. The usual lobster pots and a steady stream of Fastnet competitors making their way back home. I have so much respect for these guys each with their own tale to tell. I also feel an affinity towards them, I will have felt the same as they do after a 24 hour motor race. Part shattered, part glad to be alive, part what if, part I can't believe we just have but above all a shared bond with their fellow competitors. Walking round Plymouth the Fastnet competitors stick out like a sore thumb because they are a metaphorical foot taller than everyone else.

You wouldn't believe it but the gorgeous river Yealm entrance is here !

As we entered Plymouth the engines flicked onto 200 hours. Given this is where Princess is based and the boat was built there seemed a certain symmetry. I've never actually seen where Princess is but plan a "drive by" up the Tamar before we leave town.

The centuries old view mariners have seen as they approach Plymouth including Ye Olde Worlde big wheel :)

I've seen this old girl somewhere before on here !

Sutton Harbour, Marina, Lock - call it what you will and I'm still not entirely sure what you do call it was indeed a wise choice so thank you to everyone who suggested it. We got in on free flow and they shut the gates just as we left the lock chamber ! Princess Yacht Sales have a presence here and very kindly sorted me out with a spot right by the entrance and facilities. A short step into town.

Late lunch by the Ferry landing stage - can't remember the name of the place but the kitchens are set into arches under the roadway which leads to the Hoe. They have their own fishing boat so no problems on quality or freshness. We even saw people buying fresh fish from the kitchens.

A spin on the big wheel which dominates the Hoe and an impromptu air display courtesy of 6 Yak 50s amazing. Unfortunately the planes were just too far away to get good photos - we have been rather spoiled by air display piccies on this forum! The area around Sutton Marina is gorgeous and full of charm. Loads of stuff to do particularly if the weather turns as it is predicted to do over the weekend. The Aquarium in particular looks amazing and worth a visit.

A quick wash down of the boat and then out into town for a couple of pints.

The next couple of days don't look too promising but we are tucked up nice and cosy :)

It's a small world!
The Sealine F43 pictured in a previous post taken at Salcombe is mine.
My 2 dogs are sitting admiring the view.

That night was the worst night we've ever spent on-board. When the tide turned the boat went beam on for about 2 hours and I swear we were pitching at angles close to 45 degrees. It was all we could do to stay in bed! One of the dogs was sick and the other was distraught. SHMBO was both!!
Great post by the way.

If you pm me your email adress I will email over the raw file. It's much higher resolution and you can have it as a memory of Salcombe :)

I took a couple of other as well which I'll include.

If you are stopping at Dartmouth on the way back you should go upstream to Dittsham, there are a couple or three really good moorings just below greenway house (agatha christies place) just upstream from the anchor stone off of Neds point... This is below the turn off Dittsham were it opens up... This is a real magic spot with magnificent stars at night due to almost no light pollution, and a easy dingy ashore to the pub...

We used to sit there all the time on our S34 and I never saw another powerboat up there... Bizarre. A nice little cruise up the river and then a great quiet spot which is a big change from the town.

Nice pictures!

Last time we were in Dartmouth we picked up a mooring just south of the ferry and had dinner in the Ferry Boat Inn. The landlord was amusing !

Day 7 of our long weekend

The weather has closed in as we were expecting. Strong winds and heavy rain. Sutton Marina is the perfect spot to sit it out.

Who ever would have thought it, they make Plymouth Gin in Plymouth !

This makes up for the Aquarium. To be fair it's not a particularly bad aquarium it's just that from the outside it's massive leading you to believe you're going to get lost in there for half a day. With a sandwich you'll do it in around an hour. My tip take ear plugs to use whilst eating your sandwich.

They got the local primary school to design the place. Queue in the rain to get in the go up some stairs and put a play area on the landing by the restaurant. I say restaurant, "are you waiting for chips" covered their entire hot food menu. The net result of this play area is that all the tables are full of people waiting for their kids, pushchairs litter what little floor space there is, stationary bodies prevent people actually getting to see the fish and little Johnny's screams of refusal to leave the climbing frame amazingly manage to overpower the 64 other children's screams of joy as they smear snot and other bodily fluids & solids all over the equipment. Strenuous activity straight after a meal rarely results in the contents remaining in one's stomach.

We saw a good selection of what we had eaten so far on our journey along with a couple of sharks, some stingrays and an epileptic turtle who's blind in one eye and retains gas to the point that his bum rises upwards. North of thirty quid for the 3 of us seemed a bit steep. At least the lad charging for the sandwiches got his numbers wrong meaning that our snack was only slightly more than Mayfair prices. Think motorway services and add a bit for good measure !

On the plus side have I told you they make gin here. Not only that but you can buy it for consumption aboard your boat :)

The Thai house was very good on Notte Street and easily lived up to it's various awards framed on the wall. On the way back we saw a sign for Primark so I'm going to send to girls off for some retail therapy in the morning safe in the knowledge that nothing costs more than a tenner whilst I relax in readiness for a carvery Sunday dinner booked for 2.00pm. Hmm…….

A few people seem concerned I'm overdoing things on my relentless journey to bring you all that is good from the west country.. Fear not, I've been in training for months and the ice maker is brim full.

A bit of great news Duet completed the Fastnet race. The last boat to do so we have been tracking her for some time and it was great to see her finally cross the line. I suspect I was not the only one monitoring her progress. Victory isn't always about coming first.

Oh, more good news about Plymouth the dive shop just yards from our boat re-filled my dive bottle for £4. Thank you Aquanauts on Vauxhall Street. To celebrate I treated myself to a new diving knife which I hope never to use in anger on rope but just in case it's there.

Day 8 of our long weekend.

Oh dear. As I post this the sun is streaming through the windows, cockpit covers are coming off and the wind looks set for single digits over the next few days. As we tour Falmouth, Fowey and the like I suspect we will win few friends amongst those earning a living this week :)

Sent the girls out shopping, ran the Hoover round the boat once they'd gone and flicked a magic dust cloth over the surfaces. To be fair I do sod all most of the time so 10 minutes wasn't going to kill me !

Took the bike out for a bit of a ride round. Strangely enough Motor boat monthly have just reviewed folding bikes and ended up awarding the Tern top marks. Handy that as we bought a couple a few months ago ended up with the cheaper C7 rather than the C8. They are indeed very good. What I have noticed though is mine seems to go downhill far easier than it does up hill. I wonder if it's faulty? The trip down from the Hoe was a lot quicker than the slog up.

A bit of a car show going on together with a really good band, Elvis was definitely in the building today. Carvery lunch in town which wasn't bad. Meat a little dry but all the rest was spot on. Came across the weirdest antiques emporium which had loads of stuff on display but nothing was actually geared up to people buying things. I didn't see them sell a bean despite loads of people looking. Resisted the temptation to buy Marilyn Monre's swimsuit for half a million pounds. It must be worth it because there was an accompanying eBay advert for £499,995.

I am pleased to report that on this occasion the Spanish Armada was nowhere to be seen.

Back to the boat for a bit of sunbathing on the flybridge. The Barbican really comes alive at night. Loads of music and some excellent bands. Quite surprised they allow the levels to get as loud and until as late as they do. Not complaining because I can move if I don't like it, just surprised.

Dinner in a Japanese restaurant. Sat on the floor which took some getting used to . Eventually found a position which didn't cause bodily extremities to go numb but getting up afterwards was an experience. I must be getting old!

I have to say Sutton Marina really is a great find so thanks for the advice and also to Princess for sorting it out for us. A lovely atmosphere, great facilities and friendly staff. I had a cycle round to some of the alternatives and it really does stand out as the place to stay on your first visit. Even down to seating outside the office and drinks being available there some great touches. Plymouth as a town has really blown us away. Everywhere you turn there is history, narrow streets, more cobbles than you can shake a stick at and the sea as a backdrop. The motorbikes are a bit loud and fierce at times and the cobbles shake your nuts to buggery whilst cycling but other than that it wins my seal of approval.

She's thinking, "what a bright shade of orange".

He's thinking, "Proper Job" (you see I'm even picking up the local lingo).

Yes, thanks again Henry, great photos and reporting.
Interesting shots of Salcombe as I very rarely see it with the tide well out , due to needing to be up in Kingsbridge by HW+/-3hrs.
In Plymouth the Barbican area unfortunately does have rather a reputation for drunken punch-ups and widespread vomiting at weekends. Sutton Harbour Marina may be far enough away to avoid most of this - provided you wish to avoid it , of course.:D
