Ok, a very very long weekend !

I always enjoy reading about people's boat trips. So much more fun than debating depreciation, berthing costs or whether boil in the bag roast beef is better than traditional spam. If you're landlocked at the moment why not tag along with us as we make use of all that polishing, engine servicing, anti-fouling and thankless hours draining boat builder's drinks cabinets at the various boat shows. Sometimes it's hard to see the wood for the trees and remember why we enjoy boating.

Day 1 - departing Haslar

The general idea is to head West towards Plymouth. There are loads of great spots along the way so we're going to get waylaid but isn't that all part of the fun. As we set off today one or two other people had the same idea but clearly didn't share my flair for navigation. All the gear & no idea springs to mind they reckon Cowes to Plymouth is 600 miles & change whilst I'd say 130 miles is closer to the mark. The only way I could make it that far would be to go via the Fastnet rock !

Cowes was, as you might expect something of a scrum as yachts jostled for position at the Fastnet start line. We followed the big cats down towards Hurst Castle managing to bag a spot at anchor to see the front runners on their way. One or two came within touching distance and it was a hell of sight. You cannot comprehend the sheer size of some of the competitors. At the other end of scale there were double handed entries that would comfortably fit on a 10 metre finger in the corner of your marina. An epic race and I wish everyone taking part Godspeed.

The run across to Poole was uneventful bar a multitude of lobster pots including a black one encrusted in weed just below the surface of the water. I probably should have gone back and pulled it out, there is no excuse. At the other extreme were the lovely bright marks with flags, visible from several hundred metres. to those fishermen I say thank you and I promise to eat more lobster.

Had a V39 (or possibly V42) tack on astern as we headed across Christchurch bay. Portland coastguard were busy chatting to Maitre Coq following it's collision with a small fishing boat. They struggled a little with the boat name, some things don't translate well on VHF radio. I also thought the skipper was boasting about his metric yard length gentleman's appendage. The lifeboat was deployed and by all accounts the fishing boat came off worse in the fight. I did think of Andy 59's recent near miss whilst fishing, maybe our debating on here isn't a total waste of time after all !

I haven't visited Poole for ages. The last few times we anchored off Brownsea Island but this time it was Poole Quay Boat Haven, the former Dolphin marina. I've forgotten to pack my shorts so hopefully the towns purveyors of fine gentleman's country wear will be able to replenish my on board wardrobe.

Met up with a trio of French Princess owners who were Solent bound. Gave them some local knowledge and in return they insisted I partake in small glass of Champagne. A fair trade in anyone's book.

The next time we get asked for length overall when paying our mooring fees I'm going to tell them 8 metres and show this:

Snuck in a couple of pints on the quayside before turning in and was reminded how beautiful the old town is, we really are lucky in having such a rich heritage. People often ask how far I go on the boat. Do you go over to France is a common question. The answer is yes, we have done in the past and there is a definite appeal in crossing territorial boundaries under your own steam but for sheer diversity and heritage I'm not sure you can beat good old Blighty. As for Poole if there's a town with more pubs I've yet to see it !

Great pics Henry, thanks. We also were knocking around at the start as my Bro is racing albeit very mid-pack in a 38 footer. There was some magnificent stuff out there. Our iPhone pics don't do them any justice so we'll just enjoy yours.

AIS track on yellowbrick shows the big boats doing 25kn+ WOW!

Also had my usual Thursday out in Cowes week with friends and despite the delayed start and lack of wind, we managed to get up close and personal with a number of the bigger boats. Do it every year and love it.

Interesting that you had to move FP back and substitute some sort of flybridge to improve one of those pics, but I'll let you off, as you managed to tie it back up again so I didn't even notice :)

Fri/Sat a week ago.
SS is unbelievably large, and I was v.terrified when mooring in case of pranging it: should be called "You're the tender" or similar.

Nice pics henry keep them coming.... or take pics and steadily upload them throughout the winter to keep us sane :)

Great post and pics again, cruise reports always make for a very interesting read, thanks.

Nice selection of very impressive craft; trimarans, Spirit and all the mobos.

Looking forward to the sequel.

There used to be a television programme called Treasure Hunt. Men of a certain age will remember it fondly, not necessarily for the places it visited, stunning though they were or the problem solving required to solve each riddle. No, the main appeal was Anneka Rice in her slightly too tight around the buttocks jump suit bouncing around our Phillips television with, together with the Waltham music centre dominated our sitting room. I don't recall them ever featuring Poole town centre in the series and I now know why. It's too damn difficult to find anything.

A Borat mankini - piece of cake, full sized adult onsie - what style, gorilla, pirate, teletubbie, superman, spiderman or any other comic based super hero, T-shirt with fake printed on oversized breasts and ultra thin waist - come on they're free with every 4th pint in any of the 27,000 pubs which little the town.

But a pair of gentleman's shorts. No chance. Oh they exist, I'm not saying you can't find a pair of shorts in Poole, just not in a 34 inch waist, not in some strange design which makes you look like a Bedouin court jester or not in some heinous shade of pink, vermillion or camouflage. Incidentally on the subject of the Bedouin court jester's shorts it would appear the possession of funds required to purchase a 28 metre Sunseeker Yacht does not guarantee your offspring the ability to dress themselves properly in the morning. You shouldn't judge - but I did ! Pudding bowl haircut kept perfectly horizontal whilst cutting rather than angling down at the rear and some sort of nappy come shorts were striking to say the least. Showing not an ounce of interest as Mum & Dad got the grand tour, instead staying glued to your iPad with a face that said no Toby you're not having another Lamborghini to play with in the garden, you've already destroyed three. It's sooooo unfair !

Anyway, help finally arrived in the form of a gargantuan clothes shop called Primark. I'm not very good at high street shopping but heed my words, this company will go far. Very reasonable prices and a vast selection. Their T-shirts are so cheap you wouldn't bother washing them, just grab another from the dressing room shelf. 2 pairs of £7 chinos and a pair of scissors later I now have shorts and we can set sail for Weymouth.

Weymouth on the town quay features in every West country trip we make. It's the West country's Severn Bridge. A wander around the old town, re-hyradtion at the Weymouth Yacht club bar - for medical purposes only, a meal at Mallams, stunning fireworks in the amphitheatre of Weymouth bay, meeting a couple of forumites and some new people as well. Perfect.

Weather for tomorrow looks set fair to cross Lyme bay.

great stuff henry delighted to see you are heading west - i agree about Poole we used to visit often and I like the anchorage around the corner off brownsea very much.

well sheltered , just the 1/2 hrs boat trippers to disturb the peace. nice beach for a bbq too.

Just to add some useful information to this otherwise worthless rambling it would seem the town quay pontoons now have shore power. An Olympic legacy ?
