Re: steering a powerboat at slow speeds

With no keel, powerboat can slither sideways at 5knots ...although the idea is to use this and/or compensate for this using wind/tide/one or both engines. Steering is set dead-ahead at 5-6 knots, and just use engines. Lose an engine and it gets somewhat weird with one engine on one side of transom.

You never answered my question as to whether Knockando whisky is any kop?

AndrewG,

Re dinghy's in Chichester harbour.

As a motor boater who is based in Chichester I get very frustrated when coming up to Itchner reach and beyond to east head. It's great to see all the dinghy's racing and very entertaining to watch, especially when I have a raggie on board explaining why they are turning when they do and how they 'hide' from the tide on bends.
I find it very difficult to please all the dinghy's, if you slow down for one you inevitably get in another's way. So, is the dinghy's sailors preferred motor boater action to keep going at a steady speed? And is that what they are expecting?

Thanks

Kevin.

Knockando is fine - its that claymore piss you have to steer clear of - it's absolutely dire - wouldn't even clean brushes with the stuff.

Re: Education Education Education

Vic

I think that that is my point. Forget about the arguments following different methods of propulsion. We are supposed to follow a set of rules to prevent collision. It's quite clear that collectively most of us don't know the rules. I know that the RYA's attitude is "Education, not Legislation", but Education doesn't seem to be working. Personally, I suspect that Legislation wouldn't do any better.

As an instructor, I'm very aware that five days isn't enough for a student to thoroughly learn the whole of the syllabus for Competent Crew, Day Skipper, or Coastal Skipper. The best I can do is to give the basics, and to put the case for continuing to learn after the course. But if people don't try to continue learning, or even worse say that once they've got the certificate they can forget what they've learnt, what can we do about it? Maybe we should have refresher courses?

Re: Balls!

See Annex IV, 1(g). ".....a signal consisting of a square flag having above or below it a ball or anything resembling a ball." Maybe a pair of woks might be better?

Re: Missing rules from Web Sites

Ouch!! That is TWO sites with authoritative looking copies of the rules but with omissions.

I am sure I used to have a bookmark (before one of the many rebuilds) on IMO for the IRPCS. Anybody got it?
