Probably more PBO but as someone asked about replacing a Mattress on their MOBO seemed apt here.

We love our Trawler Yacht in every way with the exception of the mattress in the forward cabin which is a little 'skinny'.

I manage OK but it has been a bone of contention for SWMBO since we took delivery at the back end of last year, so I set about looking for a solution.

A made to measure pocket sprung mattress was the thick end of £1400 for something top quality which is more than I was looking to spend so started to look in other directions before shelling out on a Mattress and came across the Froli 'star' system. This is a modular spring system that fits to virtually any shape with the added benefit that the air circulation will massively help reduce condensation.

I measured up and purchased the kit I would need, and set about fitting yesterday in a couple of hours; it would have been less if I had RTFM (Read the Flipping Manual!)

Bed Base Ready for system fitting

The base is modular with a selection of three fittings to best suit the space available. Each base unit has an arrow which must be facing up (I did not notice this until part way through so had to disassemble!) it is a case of laying out the base units to find the best fit for the shape you are looking to fill and then clipping them together. Then putting on the springs which is a piece of cake. Two spring colours are in the set, Light Blue which are softer and are recommended for the shoulder area's, and Dark Blue which are slightly firmer. There are Red Tensioners included in the kit which are a recommended to be fitted in the lumbar area springs, again all very straight forward. It took me back to the days of Meccano sets!

You can purchase 'half springs which I was not aware of at the time, these are useful where you can't fit a full spring.

Finished Bed - Note in the top right hand corner a spring I need to remove and replace with a half spring to make it fit.

The arms can also be cut to make them fit in tight areas, below is another I will need to put a half spring on.

It is then just a case of putting your Mattress on top.

How is the finished result? SWMBO is very happy with the added comfort it is like a new bed.

If you do have an uncomfortable berth I can thoroughly recommend this system, reasonably priced, easy to fit and makes a real difference.

No connection whatsoever with the conmpany.

I got mine from the link Martyn posted, quick and efficient service.

I bought two bed in a boxes £259 as I had not measured accurately so have half a box left over!

You can buy one box and an upgrade pack which is 12 extra springs etc and is probably the most cost efficient way.

Why is it always SWMBOs that complain about mattresses? We have a mattress on our boat which has all the softness of a breeze block and I find it perfectly comfortable but SWMBO kept going on and on about it. The solution we found was a John Lewis mattress topper http://www.johnlewis.com/home-garden/bedroom/mattress-toppers/c700003446/pg-view-all I'm no expert on beds but I think there are 2 kinds of mattress problems on boats. Either they're just too hard like ours in which case a mattress topper is a good idea or they're too thin and you feel the board below the mattress when you lie on it, in which case the Froli system seems like a good solution. Congratulations on finding a solution that works for you

Thanks Mike; our issue was the latter for which we tried the former but that was not acceptable to SWMBO's. To be fair she has undergone some major surgery for the big C which have left her with no latissimus dorsi so I guess she has a fair excuse!

Early days but this is ay more comfortable than what we had.
