We have a Plastimo bulkhead compass 20 yrs old. We need a new one,the bigger and clearer the better. Has to have a light. Any suggestions Ta Nik

We replaced a very old Plastimo bulkhead compass with one of these.

Works well, easy to read, has an integral light and (assuming your bulkhead is into the saloon) also gives a cool blue glow below during the day.

Me too!!

Replaced my old contest with a 101. Perhaps overkill on a 23footer but that's what she had before so the hole was already there.

The protective cover (which is perhaps a touch light) is very handy for stopping the bulb from going milky from the sun when unattended.

I think I got mine from marinestore for about 85-90 quid.

Google Ritchie compasses. Then look up the BN-202 Navigator Bulhead Compass. Big and very clear. But pricey. Bought one few months back to fill a hole in a bulkhead that was too large for the Plastimo jobies.

Bought via local chandler, but I think Marathon Leisure are the main UK agents.

Hope it helps

Plastimo used to do the Contest 140 - I found a replacement in their Croatian distributor in Pula in 2008.

Sadly they've discontinued it in favour of the 130.

The # in the Plastimo range of compasses stands for the diameter of the compass globe.

That will be the largest reasonably priced compass you'll find on the market (for bulkhead mounting).
Plastimo compasses are of a far higher quality than the rest of their product range - they're their original core product (and probably the only one they don't buy in from another manufacturer and re-badge)

Have a look on Ebay, there are some really good deals on new Plastimo compasses, we bought ours for about 10% cheaper than any on line chandlery. There are several Ebay shops with them in.

Yeh after our little nite sail back from Ireland under a wonderful shooting star display that was finished off by an amazing site of the european space station for about two minutes i realized how important a good old compass is! With an electronic compass all it takes is for the sparks (sorry when...) to go down and your in the poo.

I wouldn't go to sea without a proper (no batteries) compass, the contest 101 is the one i prefer as its just a replacement from the contest 100 i replaced a couple of years ago.

Expect to be told different by the electronics brigade, although i do like to see a good standalone chartplotter, but dont own one of them, a rolling road on a gps is as far high tech as i can afford right now.
