...but was not quite the end of the story,

also ended up badly for Aztec (if you watch the video, they are the ones who sent out a mayday)

sorry, excuse 1 more yachty pic, but this is my folks leaving Yarmouth, now I am 45 years old & seeing my Dad 40 years older with a boat is rather inspiring (especially with just my mum as crew) and I can only hope for another 40 years boating.

Indeed she seems to handle the rough stuff pretty well in your video, considering also the (relatively) high speed you were keeping.
The sailboats in your pics are beautiful, no need to apologise at all for posting them here.
Including the one of your remarkable parents, of course!

Just what I was thinking looking at the vid. The Mitchell seems to revel in those conditions. Is it right that your dad is 95yrs old and still sailing? Wow, I have regular conversations with the SWMBO as to how long we could go on boating. Seems like we could have a good few years left. Is that a Contest 42 btw? We have some friends with one of those and its a beautiful boat

PS does your dad speak to you what with you having gone over to the dark side?:D

...ermm... If your math is anything to go by, you definitely need some holiday, I reckon. :D :p
Though I'd be more than happy to be willing and capable to go sailing, even with 10 years less than that!
 
Mike, 45+40= 95...? are you one of those special accountants?;):D Their Contest is a 46, they bought it new 20 years ago now and indeed is lovely. A lot of folk compare against Halbery Rassey, however HR as positively mass production compared to Contest, a real thing of beauty. (IMO...)

My Dad just loves the fact we have a boat, the fact it has not got sails isn't an issue I'm pleased to say!

Mapism is right. I'm off to my boat tomorrow for our summer hols and it looks like I really need the break:D Apologies to your dad if he's read this
 
Yes FF, great post once more. The way the spray was all over your boat was a good indication video and photographs never really truely display how untidy the conditions are/were.

Regarding the mayday, was anybody injured during the dismasting of the yacht? How dangerous was the situation really?

Dad and Mums boating is really impressive and inspirational stuff!

Fantastic stuff regarding your parents enjoying their lovely boat at that age. Very well done.

Hi Callum

We were beam on to the wind so waves push out the way on the port side went straight across us, was steady 28knots gusting 40knots according to a chap out racing off Yarmouth the same morning who we spoke to, the eastern side of the Solent was a lot wilder, as we got round to the western side, although still windy it was quite calm in comparison as in the shelter of the island.

You are correct about your thoughts of Aztec (the sail boat dis-masted), they did call a mayday & if a crew member had been hit by the mast and was severely injured of course that would have been the right call, thankfully that was not the case so a pan pan would have done, but if it were me I would have just called the committee boat (as they were racing at the time). In fact it was the committee boat who ended up responding to the mayday and towed Aztec into Yarmouth, even though Lymington lifeboat was tasked with the mayday. The committee boat was our friend in his boat Dunlin, a Lochin 333 with twin 300hp perkins sabres so in fact was a little better equipped than the RNLI's altantic 21, his view it was not a mayday. However a dismasting is a bit of a traumatic event, issuing a mayday didn't do any harm & certainly got them attention quickly!

Beautifully repaired (as I thought) oil cooler hose failed, his time on the way to newton creek, so immediate shut down and dropped anchor and called my mate with his lochin to tow us back into yarmouth. Compression joint used had nothing to grip to at joint end and just popped off under load. Now repaired version two sees braised threaded hose ends on each joint and hydraulic pipe bolted in between, better than original, just wish the chap had done that first time round...another 5l oil to clean up.

Plus side I have found a supplier of shell rimula rt4x on the island, 20L for £46. + vat. Through work I can get it at £97+vat.... go figure...
