I always thought a yard would make for an easily handled downwind sail.
Check Nicholl's Concise Guide front and back covers if you doubt.
Jonic's one is a square-rigger of sorts though.
Not sure I agree with the "brigantine" label though. It's more of a topsail schooner, although you then need to shoehorn the word "staysail" in somewhere to indicate that there's no gaff foresail. "Topsail staysail schooner" sounds a bit silly, so I can see why they chose the label they did.
