.....a continuation, why do we go sailing?

I just love the very act of sailing....... harnessing the breeze, feeling the will of the boat through the tiller. Happy enough to go out for as little as an hour, and often the best sail is on an evening after a day in the office, leaving the worries of work on the shore and breathing deep of fresh air and freedom.

To me there are two things that spring to mind:

1) Freedom. It is MY choice where I go. MY choice what risks I take. MY choice what preparations I make. That degree of personal responsibility is rare in today’s over regulated world

2) Sence of peace. Even if not sailing, a morning fiddling about on the boat and an afternoon nap with a gentle breeze flowing through the cabin is a real luxury. I put a message on my mobile answer phone saying that I am sailing and phone reception is poor and to send a text if it is urgent. I then turn the thing off.

Tongue firmly in cheek, have you seen the rubbish that is on the TV.

Personally, I go sailing as I love being outdoors, I no longer pull my mountaineering boots on as my body can't take the punishment, but I do pull my sea boots on.

I love the physical and mental challenge of getting a boat and its crew from A to B or even A to A as long as we all enjoy the day out.

I am prepping the boat and me for some longer trips when I retire - I shall not be posting another YouTube channel as it has all been done and one wave is very much like another.

I was going to drop this one in the Too Difficult tray.

However..

My father sailed; my mother tolerated it.

My father would sail ANYTHING, anywhere, at any time, and had done since he was sixteen, from an RCC B class sailing canoe to working Brixham and Lowestoft trawlers to trading dhows up and down the Somali coast, via his own cruising boat, a 35ft sloop, through Fireflies, GP 14s, RNSA 14s. And for my seventh birthday he gave me "Swallows and Amazons" .. I have a photo of him singlehanding his last boat at the age of 85. With the jackyard topsail set.

So I have gone through life considering time not spent sailing as a tiresome interlude.

Not much of an answer, really.
