I want to put my outboard in a case for transportation, to protect it and ensure it remains right side up.

I might make one out of plywood, but I want to keep the weight down. Does anyone make plastic ones?

You could try Custom Cases of Waltham Cross. They will make a light-weight case to fit almost anything. Just turn up with it and they will find a case to suit and cut the lining so it fits. Probably cost more than the O/B though!

Ask your outboard dealer for an empty outboard box (they are usually happy to get rid of them) . Drain all fuel from your outboard for transportation and if its a four stroke drain the sump oil too.

My Mariner has a label on one side that says it can be transported 'this way up'. It's 4 stroke, always assumed I didn't have to drain the oil, I don't have a manual though to check. The fuel is in a seperate plastic tank.

I thought of the packing case idea, but assume them to be a bit bulky?

You could make one out of 9mm ply with 25x25mm softwood to make the join.Perhaps with formers inside to position the OB and some high density foam. It will be heavier and bulkier than a custom built plastic case though. PM me if you want any advise. I have made wooden cases for transporting scenery and props.
