A boat with no name

We decided to rename our new boat (no we're not superstitious) and currently have no markings on the hull as I removed the vinyl lettering for the previous name last weekend.

We were hoping for the yard to be able to lift her out this weekend but there's still no cradle available for her, so they can't.

One job I need to do is to clean the transom thoroughly and to stick on the new name lettering.

As we can't work on the boat this weekend, I'm considering a trip across the channel to Calais instead.

Can anyone tell me whether sailing a boat with no name marked on it will get us into hot water?

Thanks, Steve.

No name on the hull on Kindred Spirit - the previous owner took the letters off for a repaint and we never got round to refitting them. We did have the name on the dodgers, but it was only visible at close range because the name was sewn in the same colour as the background!

Personally I wouldn't be worried about an absence of name, but you should be on the SSR (or Part One) for going to France, so you should be showing an SSR number.

Dunno. Found not having a name on the transom was quite useful when departing anchorages ( not pontoons, moorings or anywhere they provide services) ahead of the HM and without paying.

Yes thanks - I'm aware of that and have a paper version that I'll protect and put on the back for the time being.

I'm just reluctant to stick the new name on properly until I've been able to get to the back of the transom and give it a proper cleanup.

Oh - this is just a problem of reaching the transom which you were hoping to do with the boat ashore?

Can you not just sit in the dinghy tied across the stern?

Any half decent sign shop can sell you vinyl lettering cut to size. Choose the font wisely. A chum has just had his done and I haven't got the heart to tell him it looks awful.

I inherited a car registration plate with the boats name on it. Actually quite useful for tieing to the for'd lifelines on occasion.
About a fiver from car places that do them ' as you wait ' ?
