My wife is getting a bit more comfortable with the thought of a boat...
Was watching this video last night...

And she pipes up I want to go out on her, so I had to book flights over to the UK and next Saturday we are off on a round trip to Tighnabruaichm, much like my late uncle in the 1950s though this is the PS Caledonia rather than the Waverley.

Thanks Donny Wilcox ;)

She passed our apartment yesterday in the mist at Wemyss Bay .... was like something out of a film .... 7k a day apparently her running costs of fuel are!! Great to see!! Have a great time!!

When I were a lad there were paddle car ferries on the regular Lymington Yarmouth run, into the 1970s then…
I think each paddle must have been capable of separate drive because there are some pretty tight turns in the river at low water springs and then there was all the docking amid cross winds and pleasure boats .

Not nearly as good looking ?
That Waverley fair clips along in the video eh, hope it’s a grand initiation for the OPs wife ?

Big disappointment, just had an email to say she is not sailing on Saturday :(
Wife is even more disappointed than me... but at least it's giving me a little time to service the Honda outboard so there is an upside ;)
First it was the aircraft, a crack was found in the inside of one of the portholes so they had to check all was still safe to fly, a few minutes delay turned into a 2 hour wait until we got a new slot to fly in from ATC, so a bit late in Edinburgh yesterday.
A fault was discovered in the port paddle box of PS Waverley and she has been laid up for repairs to Sunday, however we fly back home on Sunday.
The cruising speed of the Waverley is 13knt and her top speed is around 18knts

Fond memories of Penarth to Ilfracombe on the Waverley as a kid.
I’ve pictures of her in the solent and the Medway from my boat. Lovely sight.

Very noisy although the engines are quiet you hear the paddles for miles
most paddles are not individually driven as there is a risk of capsize as I understand although some naval tugs are an exception

Well we are not out on a paddler but we are taking a cruise on Loch Lomond tomorrow afternoon doing the Sweeny's Island tour.
I've ordered up a service kit for the little Honda outboard and been offered the use of a boat from a friend in Helensburgh so when we return in September we should be on the water at long last :)

They can make some mess when they run aground, was on the Maid of the Loch when she ran onto a sand bank at Balmaha one year, boy did she sling the mud from that little excursion :)
