Hi All,

I'm wondering whether my 'man flu' has fuddled what remains of my brains. A large French supermarket was selling new Genyx 1300w inverter generators for 198 euro. I bought one and hope I can use this to power the microwave, halogen hob etc (not all at once) when my boat is away from marina power.

The instruction manual is all in French, but the generator has English words such as On/Off on it and says it is a 1500 model. The electrical connector on the front is a standard French domestic output but it comes with a French plug which can be wired.

I am curious as to whether I could use this for my boat and how easy it would be? I'm thinking it could be as simple as buying another external marina power short connector and wiring the external end of this to the generator output and connect the other end to the boat cable. Is it this easy? How would I ensure that I get the polarity right from out of the generator or does this not matter? The generator also has a earth attachment on the front, on a boat what would one connect this to?

We will be in France for a few more days so if it is a Lemon I can return it for a full refund.

Happy New Year to all!

Looks ok to me:

I use a Honda EU20i in a similar way - I made up a lead which connects the gennie to the shorepower inlet; works perfectly. At less than 200 quid I think you've got a bargain!

Cheers
Jimmy

Jimmy, thanks for the reassurance and the link. The unit does look well made and I've emailed them asking if they have an English version of the manual, not that the French is that taxing :-)

I also use Honda E20i and it's fine for the job.
A 1500w genny might struggle to run a microwave of say 800w because the startup power required to start the microwave is considerably more than the power normal running power (if that makes sense)!

Unfortunatly when you buy somthing in France they deliberately omit English from the Instruction Book. I once bought something and the instruction book had French,Spanish,Polish,German, Russian,Chinease, Lituanian,Swedish, Etc.But not English.
However as your generator was probably made in China, you would find that it is also imported to the UK under another name and if you can find one locally go and read the instructions.
