850 nm from Canet to Salerno and the Amalfi coast (Lots of photos!) - Part 1

I'm feeling guilty about over hijacking of Mark's IT cruise story. So shall we suspend it till another occasion?
Agreed, apologies also from my part.
I'll just add, since MAFWeiss mentioned that he's considering the Seakeeper for Artemisia, that fwiw I'm also in the field of those who think that it makes good sense NOT to have fins sticking out of a 30+ knots boat.
Looking forward to your upgrade thread, I'm particularly curious about the HT.

If I were buying a P68 to replace our P67, I would probably not specify stabilisers.
If we get swell, we move.
All stabiliser systems require the generator running and for me peace and quiet is what anchoring is about.

here is my first but only comment I'll give on this stab debate in this thread, (there are other posts I would like to comment but reserve that for the Jfm-MapisM debate thread ;-) )

Mike, my stabs can run for 1 to 2 hours on battery's !
and we use this mode quite often during a luch or a swim at anchor, to not have generator smoke nor noise.
Ofcause this won't work with bigger swell, when the fins need more power, but in that case we wouldn't be in that spot anyway, as you already commented
but for the stab to non stab experience, I can strongly advice you to get some real live experience on this, as MapisM sugested !

but yes, lets close this bebate in order to stop further TD, on this excellent thread from MAFWeiss

Haha, glad to hear that you appreciate our debates!

Just a small additional note on your setup, in fairness towards anyone potentially interested:
CMC doesn't suggest (actually, they don't even consider, afaik) running their electric stabs out of battery power+inverters.
And to my knowledge, BA is the only boat on the planet which can actually run zero speed stabs without a genset.
Which requires a mix of conditions, I reckon: not too rough sea on one hand, as you say, but also a top notch electric system, with a lot of batteries and correspondingly powerful inverters.
This is just in case anyone else might be attracted by the idea: I see no reasons why it couldn't be replicated on other boats, but a bit of electrical system planning is definitely in order.

Thanks Bart - I didn't occur to me that they could be run from the main batteries.
Still not convinced they are worth the money

Anyway, as you all say, this isn't anything to do with the OP's initial post.
So this will be the last from me on this subject in this thread.
Sorry for the drift.
Mike

OK, as we're all allowed one comment on stabs on this thread (:D), here's mine.

MAFweiss specifically mentioned stabs with reference to anchoring up, which suggests comfort at anchor is the main issue for him, as it is for me. As I've said before I think gyros are better at anchor, mainly because of the sculling effect of fins (paddling forward). I'd encourage him to at least understand this issue before making a decision, because it isn't immediately obvious. With a gyro you can turn it on and forget about it, with fins at anchor you have to be aware that if the wind drops you might start taking an unguided tour of the anchorage.

And here's my one permitted comment! Not to mention the loss of speed from having protruding fins which of course is a non issue on a displacement boat but as I understand it is worth a not insignificant 2-3 kts on a planing boat

afaik nothing like mike, with modern fin design. 1kt and possibly (but no promises until I've tried it) less than that with curved fin. Let's pick this up in couple of months when I have some data. Oops I'm over my comment quota!
