850 nm from Canet to Salerno and the Amalfi coast (Lots of photos!) - Part 1

Many thanks for the pictures and story Mark. Great cruising, and yes to be doing this 2 yrs from standing start is great going - much respect to you on that! I hope we get down to your new neck of the woods and bump into you again - your pictures (esp part 3) are giving me much encouragement to come and see this bit of coast (I haven't been past Cinque Terre so far)

Loving the French courtesy flag :encouragement:

And yes bonus marks for fonts!

Wow, this is definitely the type of thread which we need at the beginning of January, while anxiously waiting for the next boating season...
Many thanks for sharing the experience - btw, some of your pics bring back nice memories!

Just one small suggestion, apologizing in advance if I'm sounding like an H&S maniac (which I assure you I am NOT!), referred to the "Master and Commander cooling off" pic:
Whenever the tender arrangement on the swim platform leaves the more usable part of the platform near the tender o/b (which is true for many boats, not just yours), IMHO it's a good idea to put one of those protective bags above the prop.
No prize for guessing how I know! :)

What a great post, thanks for taking the time to put it all together - all these Med threads are making me seriously consider moving my boat.... ho hum!

Great post and again a big thanks for taking the time and making the effort to share

Be interesting to see how you get on with the new marina and cruising area, wind etc

Thank you for your kind words... makes the effort worth while! The marina is an exciting project which I am very pleased to have got in early, as I am convinced in the years to come it will become one of the best marinas in the Med. The customer service has been amazing, and everything is done to a very high standard. And with this year Sicily and the Aeolian islands to explore, as well as Ponza... roll on the Summer!

Mark, thanks again for the great pics. How crowded is the Amalfi coast in July/August? Are you able to get into other marinas as a visitor at reasonable cost and can you get into the popular anchorages? What about the weather last summer? In N Sardinia it was pretty windy and I was wondering if the Amalfi coast gets the same kind of weather patterns. Lastly, its many years since I visited Naples but back then it was considered a crime hotspot. Did you experience or hear of any boat related crime along that coast?

Yup, great thread Mark and beautiful pictures

roll on the Summer!
Actually that's one of the problems of boating. Despite there being nice things to do in winter of course, nothing beats summer boating, so I often think "roll on the summer". You end up wishing half your life away, and making time seem to go faster. That's how it feels to me sometimes anyway! (Or maybe it's an age/life stage thing! :D)

Ain't that the truth and worse, when summer turns into winter, you just feel like hibernating until May. At least I do!

OK, techy question MAFWeiss please. While the main interest in that picture is undoubtedly your beautiful niece, I also noticed the detail of the ensign staff (shame on me!). What are the stainless steel rings threaded onto the staff where the flag attaches top and bottom? Do they rotate around the staff, so as to stop the flag winding itself around the staff like a kitchen roll (which happens to mine during the course of most days, with changing apparent wind during the day) or are they just decorative trim things? If they do rotate that's nice and clever. Is it a standard Prestige fitment?

The super st steel machinist Colhel on here is currently making me a new ensign staff in st steel and carbon fibre (pics to follow in another thread) and in an early design I included rotating rings, but abandoned them because I wanted to keep the design very slick and "clean". I might re-incorporate these into the design if you tell me they work well though

It is busy, and pre-booking essential. The only other marina that I have used on my side of the Amalfi coast was in Amalfi itself, and run by the Coppola brothers. And this was relatively expensive - €250 a night for us i think. It is a very small operation, and we were the smallest yacht with boats up to 130 ft there. I stayed in Naples at Marina Luise one night and this was around € 180 i think. Naples is complicated, and the men at Luise all looked and acted like mafiosi. We did not have any problems, but extra care is def needed! Generally though we found the locals charming, friendly and honest... with an element of hustle sometimes thrown in ;)
As my photos showed the weather when we were there was beautiful, with little wind BUT you can get a swell (especially off Positano) so stabilisers are a must if you want to anchor overnight in an anchorage.

I had to laugh when I read this. Just shows how compulsively an*l men get about our hobbies. I specifically wanted a stainless steel flag staff for my new boat, so I googled it and sourced one via Amazon from a company in the States.

Having visited the area a couple of times, cruising into the Bay of Naples on my own boat has been a dream i hope to realize some day.

Very well done and thank you for this wonderful report!

Yes indeed! You wouldn't believe the effort Colin (Colhel) and I have put into designing a stainless/carbon fibre job. Having got to about v.4 on the drawings, he is now making it. I'll post pics in a month or so :)

Many thanks for that link, and I have to confess I watched the video. The flag mounting rings do not rotate around the staff btw.

You are quite a whizz on BBcode, btw!

Will that 68 footer have stabilisers by any chance;);)

U betcha!! :eagerness: likely a Seakeeper 9, but am intigued by the new electric stabs.
If you went for the Princess 68 (and I realise you are weighing up an alternative) I don't think Princess will fit electric fin stabs will they? They'd fit sleipner vector fins, .65m sq, hydraulic. These would imho be much better than CMC electrics in a new build princess 68 anyway.

As for the gyro vs fin debate, that would be relevant because Princess would I think fit a seakeeper if you wanted. There is a complex list of pros/cons of fins/gyro in a new build boat andwe've done that to death on here. It depends partly on your own preferences, but I'd choose fins for sure

This is a conversation we can all have when I have chosen which vessel will bear the name ARTEMISIA
