Can anyone offer any light on this subject having bought and sold a couple of boats i was curious to know the origins of these share options

Originally done to allow plenty of scope for shared ownership (which goes back a long way in nautical circles). 64ths because its a binary multipe and divides down easily.

Comes from pieces of 8. 8 pieces = a whole. 8 x 8 = 64
