4 weeks, 2 kids, suggested routes for Holland please.

Steenbergen is off to the south of Volkerak, access via BenedenSas.
A magic trip along a very quiet river, much like the Norfolk Broads but without the trippers.
Since my last visit I believe they have built a road bridge. Can anyone confirm that the town is still accessible with a fixed mast?

Cantata wrote an article somewhere about visiting Steenburgen where Guy Gibson died and had a street named after him. PM him.
He is buried in the local Catholic Church Yard with his crew. Crashed his Mosquito in the town.

Agree with most of the above however last time we went over it cut up pretty rough approaching Vlissengen, so we opted to head North a little and enter via Roompot.
Glad we did it was much nicer than the sea lock at Vlissengen.
If you are a larger yacht beware of the fact that the bridge at the Roompot doesn't open. It certainly makes for a tightening of a certain orifice when the lock keeper says there is 21 metres under the bridge and your air draft is 20 metres! :o
Another alternative way in is at Hansweert further along the Westerschelde. The canal comes out at Wemeldinge at the eastern end of the Oosterschelde. If you are aiming for that area or heading up to the Gravelingenmeer, Haringvliet, Dordrecht etc, using that one lock will save you the locks at Vlissingen, Veere and the Eatern end of the Veersemeer plus the group of bridges between Vlissingen and Middelbury plus the Zeelandbrug.

Having finished teacher training, for the first time this year I've got time to consider our summer cruise to Holland. Not been before, we have 4 weeks, but with a 4 and 6 year old we like to sail about half the time, so a full days sailing is usually followed by a day exploring ashore.

Sadly I can't find our inland waterways guide we've had for years, so, anybody want to suggest some routes, particularly any with kid friendly delights.

Possibly got crew for the way over so could do a longer crossing and enter the waterways further north if this makes sense.

Cheers

Last time we cruised those parts (over a decade ago) we did the following:

Ipswich - Ostend - Breskens - Middelburg - Veere - Veerse Meer - Bruinisse - Colijnsplaat - Wemeldinge - Hansweert - Antwerp - Lillo - Breskens - Ostend - Ipswich.

The children were 7 and 12 at the time and they enjoyed the trip very much.
Took us 3 weeks. Different port almost every day. All within easy reach of each other.

Were the locals friendly & how was the food

The locals fought a 10 year campaign against the road bridge to carry the new motorway over the canal, and won it. It would have prevented sailing boats getting into the harbour. Instead an aquaduct has been built to carry the canal over the new motorway, and of course there is no height restriction.

We are looking forward to being back there, weather permitting, dining at the wonderful Z'Onder Zeil by the harbour, on Sunday week, (and again 10 days later). Our absolute favourite waterside restaurant / bar anywhere.

That's great news, credit to the locals for their fight.
I couldn't find any reference to this on the internet. Google Earth is showing the motorway under construction and I couldn't tell if it was under or over.
Thanks for the update.

We like the sailorman options too - although we love Zierikzee and try to finish there. Don't come out through the Roompot though. We did once and weren't aware that translated Roompot means Cream Pot. There's a reason for that ;-) Scared the bejesus out of the kids!

Goes also has a water park with flume rides - v good for kids...

Thanks for all the info:-)

A late thought. We usually go Burnham - Ramsgate - Nieuwpoort, this allows us to day sail and pick our weather. It takes longer but we regard getting on board as the start of our holidays.
Nieuwpoort is quieter than Ostend and you have the option of several marinas. We like the Royal Airforce one,[ turn 1st left]. Remote from town but very friendly and quiet and handy for the trams.
Ostend has more "buzz", perhaps the kids might prefer it.

Not particularly pleasant coming out of Vlissengen if you have a SW blowing over the ebb... I had the best view around the boat I've ever had, couldn't stand up at the helm, couldn't sit down either, and got a view from the heavens to the bottom of the troughs

Zierikzee is nice enough, but expect to have to raft up eight deep in July and August...

Thats us too, but we go to Gravelines after Ramsgate as well. Go to Oostende on Tram, fun for the kids.

Here is the finished aquaduct:

It's in the new section of the A4 motorway from Dinteloord to Bergen op Zoom.

I took the boat over from Harwich to Haringvlietdam with a friend and left it at Hellevoetsluis marina
About half the price of Suffolk Yacht Hbr
Caught the ferry home and returned with the family, in a car, wife and 2 boys aged 5 and 7 including everything incl the kitchen sink!
Left car at the marina foc
Cruised South
Willemstadt
Bruin issue
Port Zealand , this is a big marina with fantastic beach and a centre parc attached, great place to go with kids if weather is bad.
Herkingen
Willemstadt
Middelharnis
And back to Helevoetsluis
Left boat there at took family home on the ferry
Retuned a week later and sailed the boat back myself.
Holland is very child friendly, more so than the UK imho
Marinas are cheaper than UK
Best beaches are south of Rotterdam
Most have free car parking. I have never been charged to park my car at a beak in Holland unlike the UK. (We go to Holland 1 - 2 times every year by car.)
recommend you buy a set of Dutch charts of the area
You can buy them at any UK chart agent
Boys had hours of fun crabbing and fishing in the marinas
Made a lot of friends
Wetsuits ensured they could play on the beach and swim without getting cold quickly.
A folding trolley for carting all the beach stuff was a good buy.
We took a folding bike which was handy for popping to the shops for fresh milk etc.
Enjoy
You won't be disappointed
