If you are a larger yacht beware of the fact that the bridge at the Roompot doesn't open. It certainly makes for a tightening of a certain orifice when the lock keeper says there is 21 metres under the bridge and your air draft is 20 metres!Agree with most of the above however last time we went over it cut up pretty rough approaching Vlissengen, so we opted to head North a little and enter via Roompot.
Glad we did it was much nicer than the sea lock at Vlissengen.
Having finished teacher training, for the first time this year I've got time to consider our summer cruise to Holland. Not been before, we have 4 weeks, but with a 4 and 6 year old we like to sail about half the time, so a full days sailing is usually followed by a day exploring ashore.
Sadly I can't find our inland waterways guide we've had for years, so, anybody want to suggest some routes, particularly any with kid friendly delights.
Possibly got crew for the way over so could do a longer crossing and enter the waterways further north if this makes sense.
Cheers
Were the locals friendly & how was the foodLast time we cruised those parts (over a decade ago) we did the following:
Ipswich - Ostend - Breskens - Middelburg - Veere - Veerse Meer - Bruinisse - Colijnsplaat - Wemeldinge - Hansweert - Antwerp - Lillo - Breskens - Ostend - Ipswich.
The children were 7 and 12 at the time and they enjoyed the trip very much.
Took us 3 weeks. Different port almost every day. All within easy reach of each other.
Steenbergen is off to the south of Volkerak, access via BenedenSas.
A magic trip along a very quiet river, much like the Norfolk Broads but without the trippers.
Since my last visit I believe they have built a road bridge. Can anyone confirm that the town is still accessible with a fixed mast?
The locals fought a 10 year campaign against the road bridge to carry the new motorway over the canal, and won it. It would have prevented sailing boats getting into the harbour. Instead an aquaduct has been built to carry the canal over the new motorway, and of course there is no height restriction.
We are looking forward to being back there, weather permitting, dining at the wonderful Z'Onder Zeil by the harbour, on Sunday week, (and again 10 days later). Our absolute favourite waterside restaurant / bar anywhere.
Thanks for all the info![]()
We like the sailorman options too - although we love Zierikzee and try to finish there. Don't come out through the Roompot though. We did once and weren't aware that translated Roompot means Cream Pot. There's a reason for that ;-) Scared the bejesus out of the kids!
Goes also has a water park with flume rides - v good for kids...

A late thought. We usually go Burnham - Ramsgate - Nieuwpoort, this allows us to day sail and pick our weather. It takes longer but we regard getting on board as the start of our holidays.
Nieuwpoort is quieter than Ostend and you have the option of several marinas. We like the Royal Airforce one,[ turn 1st left]. Remote from town but very friendly and quiet and handy for the trams.
Ostend has more "buzz", perhaps the kids might prefer it.
Here is the finished aquaduct:That's great news, credit to the locals for their fight.
I couldn't find any reference to this on the internet. Google Earth is showing the motorway under construction and I couldn't tell if it was under or over.
Thanks for the update.

Roger, the ducks eventually didn't get any of your bread ...Hi Willie
