I have just been given a huge quantity of 4 strand plus core rope which I think is polyester. It is about 28mm in diameter and I want to make an eye splice
googling is not producing anything useful.....any experts out there.

Thank you

Unlay a similar length as you would for any eye splice.
Shorten the core ( it would be nice to taper it but not sure if that will work) Using a puller tool pull the shortened core to the centre of the rope , entering where you want the splice to commence.

Tuck the outer strands in the usual way.

Dunno ... just an idea!

Here's one method (minus core, where I think I'd think about following VicS's idea to take that out of the equation).

4 strand plus core is shroud laid. Googling for shroud laid splice brings up nothing for me, and IIRC, traditionally, eyes for deadeyes were seized rather than spliced, which makes me think that it's not normally spliced. Might be worth asking at the Int'l guild of knot tyers.

Unlay the rope and cut out the core in the unlaid part. Then make the splice as usual. The core in a laid rope (unlike a braided rope) probably doesn't take much load anyway; it is there to make the rope firmer rather than to add strength.
