I am trying to source a 4 inch square protractor (Douglas) as used on aircraft.
I have been able to find 5 inch ones.
Anyone know of a supplier ?

Are you absolutely sure? I've never seen a 4". I have a genuine WW2 RAF issue one and a modern one and both are 5". It seems to be the standard.

Just about...

I have several of The Queen's 5" Douglas Protractors, as she declined to have them back. I understand they have been manufactured by, among others, The London Nameplate Manufacturing Co., Blundell Harling, and Staedler Mars.

I am one of 'the few' remaining navs privileged to have one made and presented by the Decca Doppler Navigation Systems empire, which has - most usefully for a punctilious navigator - some additional features including the common distance scales at 1:50,000, 1:100,000, 1:200,000, 1:250,000, 1;500,000, 1:1,000,000, with Kilometres and NM.... and small cutouts of a triangle, a square, and a circle for marking very neatly those most-used chartwork symbols. :D

Truly a useful item of kit....

If it has to smell of avgas then try here.

However if a protractor is all you need then I think I saw one in Rymans recently or you could ask around your marina to see if anyone has one of those given away by PBO many moons ago :D:D

I was going to suggest http://www.transair.co.uk/sp+Transair-5-Inch-Square-Protractor+4205 , but err, it's 5 inch and you need to drill your own hole in the middle.

I used to like them for the idea for speed of plotting course from a given waypoint (faster than a portland/breton & maybe better for astro), but these days, I tend to approximate with a handwave over the chart and Mk 1 eyeball ;-)

Here's another 5" one http://marinestore.co.uk/MD290270.html

Albert,

I have tried Pooley's they no longer do 4". Have emailed a Chinese wholesale supplier, am waiting for a reply.

I used to like them (douglas protractors)because you could thread a bit of cotton through the hole and less likely to get broken than parrallel rules etc. but now prefer a Portland Plotter but being lazy generally just switch something on. Any special reason for needing a 4" version?

Yes, there is a reason.
A 4 inch is the right size for overlaying an AIS screen, having plotted in white chinagraph first.

Thanks, but I already have 3 Douglas 5 inch with holes in the middle, 4 circular ones 6 inch diameter, one circular 8 inch diameter and 2 semis from my schooldays. I am after two 4 inch. I have seen them in the past. I know they exist. Nothing else will suffice. Thanks again.

Aha ! You see?
I knew Pooley's issued them.
I have tried separately through contacts at Shoreham Airport but no luck so far.
Thank you David. Keep trying.

Make a plotter yourself

Make a computer drawing with the desired lines etc.
on your wanted dimensions. (lot of work, but it is hobby)
Then (Laser) print it on a overhead sheet.
If worn you print a new one.
