Some one recently called into question my seaman ship with the amount of incidents I report so I thought I would report on my last 4 days away........

2 separate rescues, (all raggies , one Dutch boat, both with over heated outboards attempting to reach anchored Yachts too far out for the conditions )

soles saved

4 men (one in the water )
1 woman
2 infants.

3 collisions witnessed
All raggies including one who ran over a dinghy sailor.

Pleased to report out of all that only one actual collision between my boat and another one so I must be getting better :) (not my fault, that was just a French raggie gone aground in a narrow channel ).

Nelson would have been proud to think that the sight of a French flag brought out your baser instincts. Well done :D

The French Flag, (and pole) ended up in my hand :o
I handed it back to the skipper saying "Pardon" accompanied with a typical french shrug of the shoulders ;)

So how did he manage to hit you if he was hard aground? I can just imagine the insurance claim accident report:

"The accident was clearly not my fault as I was struck by a boat that was aground in a narrow channel..."

You should know I wouldnt have posted it if I thought there was any chance of the Scuttlebutts troll hunters finding blame on my part ;)

The channel was narrow, with room only for a boat to pass either side of me with care.

Initially I obviously didnt realize he was aground and I just expected he would pass port to port.

All of a sudden I noticed his engine was running flat out and his stern swung straight into me.

He was now stuck on the bottom and on me, his flag was entangled in my stainless rails, I took a firm grip and yanked it out but it must have had a cotter pin :o

Once untangled from me I managed to get the buffoon into deep water to carry on his way .

Part of his error was not knowing the time, he was still in FDS which came apparent as I tried to explain the tidal situation.

His flag came off but at least his Keel stayed on, thats a real result for a Bavaria ;)

Before anyone tries to blame me in some way HE WAS NOT SAILING :D

Hi Tom, nice to see you back, where have you been ?

This post is supposed to be about incidents that everyone else MUST also experience but choose not to post about, its not supposed to be a witch hunt !
( I have Lyminington HM doing that part looking into incident 1).

incident 3
Newton creek, turn right,
between the mooring buoys (just before the channel turns left to the pub.)

Which signal?

. . . should the Frenchman aground in Newtown have been making to warn you?

D = manoevring with difficulty
F = disabled
G = require a pilot
K = wish to communicate
L = you should stop
M = I'm stopped
S = I'm in reverse
U = you're running into danger
V = require assistance
X = stop and watch
z = need a tug

Or just thrown the whole book at you?

The French flag being flown from a Bavaria should have been enough to suggest to me the baffoon didnt know what he was doing, an apology from him would have been nice.
Surely he has a responsibility not to go aground blocking a channel and potential rescue services for others.

So wait... Let me get this straight, you see a grounded boat trying to get unstuck and you decide that the safest place to be is right next to him? :confused:

DAKA had little choice as I was in the narrow channel to port of the other boat, where else could he go (IJMTU)?

IJMTU is a common web acronym for "I Just Made That Up" (IJMTU)

The sentence above is a recursive IJMTU, or is that a meta-IJMTU?

I am somewhat mystified that this incident is been dissected with no interest in the real problem situation where a raggie ran over a child in a pram dinghy while under instruction .

Sorry guys, I do not feel in anyway at fault in my actions.

I was in a narrow channel, the French raggie was clearly under power and swung his stern into me.

I helped him find the deep water after prizing him off my boat and I handed him back his broken bits.

I explained the tide situation to him (all in French) , he was still in FDS and got his tides wrong and off he went.

Now lets talk about the stupid woman who instructs children to sail into busy channels under the bows of raggies and stop trying to blame everything on the stinker

It's more that it's a dodgy incident without necessarily clear cut fault in a post where you claim to be trying to redeem your accident record :D

And if you'd detailed the other incidents, we might have something to go on. Helps if you give us enough to disect ;)

Not that you were trolling, yourself, of course...

So - you were overtaking, not giving sufficient room to keep clear (as he was aground then his stern can only swing 1/2 a boat length) and complain when you get hit ..
Did you not have a responsibility NOT to put your boat in danger?
