Finally happened,my little 2hp Honda seized pushing my 2.7 Honwave against the big spring tide on Saturday on the river Teign. Got my eye on a new Mariner 5hp. Any recommendations? Maybe a Tohatsu

I bought a Yamaha 6hp beginning of this year and very pleased. There is no weight difference between a 4hp Yamaha and 6hp so you may as well get the 6hp IMO, especially with a 2.7 honwave, be a nice pairing. Best deal was from BHG marine in Lymington. A bit more money that Tohatsu and mariner but quality is better.... Honda only went to 5hp and for money i thought Yamaha was best deal at the time.

adds my collection of outboards, also have a lovely 3.5hp Mercury 2 stroke (very light and has a neutral) which I will never part with, but I also have a beautiful 2hp Honda outboard (water cooled type, the one before the horrid 2.3 air cooled Honda) I might just be persuaded to part with that, totally faultless, never let me down and in really good order if you fancy a direct replacement....pm me

Thanks for that Firefly. I,ll check out the prices down at BHG. I initially considered a Mariner rather than a Yamaha or Honda on price alone. You are correct in stating the 4hp would suit the 2.7 Honwave well.

...you get what you pay for.... with your history you must know that Jap is king when it comes to engines! (& 6hp would be my recommendation, not the 4hp but that may have just been a typo from you)

Does the outboard stay on the tender, or do you have to lift it on and off each time? If the former, then 6 hp sounds a good option, but if the latter then I'd try and find a used 3.3/3.5hp 2-stroke in good condition, which is almost half the weight (and about the same as your Honda).

our fleet of outboard weights below;

Yamaha 6hp - 27kg
Mercury 3.5hp - 9kg
Honda BF2hp - 12kg

I thought all the small 2 strokes were a similar weight at about 13 kgs, so 9 sounds very light, but either way it's a lot easier to handle on and off a bouncy tender than 27 kgs.

indeed, 27kg is a bit of a weight to move around... & quite possible that I may be wrong on weight of Merc... I'm sure I saw somewhere it was 9kg... but may have been my imagination.

Hello again Firefly. Thought I should let you know, I popped into BHG on Saturday and bought a Yam 5hp. Ive yet to try it on my inflateable,but Im sure it will be a lot more fun than the old 2hpHonda. I,ll probably find I spend more time with this combination than aboard LennyVee, my little ship. Thanks for the tip.

A pleasure, those yamaha's are the best small outboards available so easy to recommend. @ BHG a good business to deal with.
