365 day EU Car Insurance

You are aware that any car insurance within the EU is valid within all EU countries up to the minimum cover required by law as a basic. So if you have cover in the UK you have minimum cover in all EU countries. My Portuguese cover actually as standard covers me for several months in the whole EU for comprehensive cover, and basic recovery too. These days the options available are legion

Yes, i was aware of that and did mention it on the thread to which i referred.

Insurance companies do not disclose that EU wide requirement; i only discovered it through the Motor Insurers Bureau website.

In UK the big players in the insurance field seem to want to cherrypick; they are not much interested in anything out of the mainstream (like a private van in mainland Europe for over 90 days). The few who will quote will not quote on-line and require a phone call with all the attendant options of button pushing before finally getting through to a call centre bod who just responds with 'computer says no'.

I followed up an ad by Tesco for van insurance the other day, I checked their website and my van (a Toyota Hiace) was not on their dropdown menu so i phoned - they were not interested.

Have you tried Abbeygate? They're always advertising on Kiss FM, 12 months cover for UK cars.

The comment above about EC requiring insurers to cover for 12 months falls on deaf ears. Our Portuguese reg car insurer told us they would only cover a "foreign" car for 90 days, which is the same as most UK insurers of UK cars say.

Abbeygate will only insure cars in Iberia as I found out when I tried to get them to extnd the cover on a car in Portugal to cover a car I was buying in the UK. Ended up with Saga who did a very good online deal.

Strange, I think it may be their Gib office which advertises every week on Portuguese radio, aimed at expats there.

Their office is in Spain I think, though they do give a Portuguese number but it still goes to Spain. They do pretty reasonable deals in my experience though if your Portuguese is up to it local companies are cheaper.

This is what puzzles me. There may be deaf ears but - from what i understand - they have no choice in the matter. It is an EU directive that insurers MUST provide the minimum legal requirement for insurance in every EU country.

I looked at the Abbeygate site. They do not list a Toyota Hiace on their drop down. God knows what is so exotic about a white van with two adults, a dog with a few boaty bits thrown in the back!

That is strange because they did have the Mazda Bongo which was never sold by Mazda in Europe. Give them a call they have a Portuguese number and are usually very helpfull. Mine is for sale by the way.

Thanks, I will give them a ring.

I suspect the Bongo is accepted as an MPV/motorcaravan. I would have no problem insuring the van as a trader but there seems to be a blind spot for a private van. It just seems to fall outside the template.

You don't need to speak Portuguese if you can make your way to Almancil where we have our office - but only for Portugiuese reg.
