There was some discussion on here through the winter about video cameras and 360 video so I thought I’d share this first attempt of me using my 360 camera with an invisible selfie stick. I won’t be getting a job at the BBC as a cameraman any time soon, it’s a bit all over the place, but the conditions were perfect and it shows the potential a more competent operator or “editor” could produce.

Very impressive. Have you a link for the selfie stick?
Its not an actual invisible stick. With a 360 camera there is enough overlap of footage that the stick can be removed from the picture somehow. Its voodoo still but not that much

What length stick did you use?

Seems like something went wrong with the video compression though. Have you tried DaVinci Resolve 17 | Blackmagic Design ? Remarkable free version though I'm not certain if it handles HEVC 265 well if thats what your camera records. The studio version does perfectly though, I was editing 5k H.265 gopro footage yesterday in the studio version, no lag at all, just as though it was 1080.

its a 3m carbon stick. Yes I’ve just realised about the compression. It viewed nicely on my phone but not si well on a tablet. This is all way above my pay grade when it comes to tech!

Thanks, I was aware of that. Was more interested in the actual length of the pole which seems quite impressive albeit a bit unwieldy.

lol sorry, of course. It was just the way you asked reminded of the apprentice sent into the trade counter to ask for a sky hook or tartan paint. The stick looks pretty good but probably only for a 360 camera, they have so much footage to work with its easy to stabilise the bouncy shot, hard to tell how much use the stick would be with a regular gopro fully extended but if only half out would be ok no doubt. I've used a larger camera on a gimbal on a more significant microphone boom pole to good effect. Then its possible to have other than super wide angle shots.

Very good.

It's a pity that lens gives so much fish-eye distortion. I wonder if it's possible to have a less-wide angle lens but still be able to remove the selfie stick?

You can apply a transform filter to get back to rectilinear, with a loss of field of view.

Yeah, it is a shame but unfortunately a side effect of the 360. The 4k lens that also came with the camera wouldn't allow the editing out of the stick. Obviously this was my first go. The distortion was at it's worst when side on but better from astern (or presumably ahead) so I will experiment with the various positions of the selfie stick. It may be that some angles just aren't practical. I'm sure someone competent that knew what they were doing could get some amazing footage
