the port engine on my caterpillar 3116 increasingly fails to turn off by the key and the manual stop button is unreachable without lifting the engine hatch. I am told the solenoid is around £1000 can this be correct and is there a cheaper non marine option does anyone know ?
many thanks
Tim

Because I needed it in a hurry I have just bought an alternator belt tensioner from Finnings for GBP 410 (next day delivered). If time was on my side, this article could be imported from the USA for less than GBP 200 including transport, insurance, duty and VAT. Just another example of rip off Britain?

Caterpillar do not make stop solenoid's and if you can find out which manufacturer supplies them then go direct to one of their agents.

Many other companies also supply them and Bosch are an example of one company, if you go direct to the Bosch dealers as I do, they also manufacture aftermarket replacements for a fraction of the price of main dealers and as I have a local Bosch warehouse close by I regularly use them.

Thanks. That's good advice if unfortunately too late in this particular case. I now know that the tensioners are made by Dayco and supplied in UK by Engine Parts (and possibly others). I haven't checked their price but it certainly won't be more expensive than Finnings!

Robbing gits. Why don’t you pull it out. It maybe part jammed with junk, or have corrosion on terminals so give it a clean and service and it will cost nothing if lucky. I fixed mine that way.

Tim, just a thought, on the 3126 (virtually identical), there are 2 types of solenoid, energise to run and energise to stop, automotive one tend to be energise to run, boats energise to stop (loss of power and it fails safe, eg engine keeps running) Easy to check see if there is power at the terminals when in run or not. 3126 in the Azi is energise to stop, it was a pain when I installed the fire extinguisher/ shutdown system. Make shire you get the right one

does the manual stop switch on the engine make it stop?
if so it could just be a bad connection in the key switch or the wiring

oh !! good thinking but too late I'm afraid but your reasoning sounds good .....s@*t

The company should be able to tell you and sorry if I linked you to the wrong thing!

That said....a few sites list the part as Road or marine. Hope you’re lucky :encouragement:

Not your fault at all I knew about marine being energise to stop but I didn't occur to me it was obviously from a road engine.
I have spoken to them and sadly they don't do energise to stop so it will have to go back, but thanks for your help anyway
