How do you prefill a 296 filter and bottom bowl, I think it is not possible.
I open the filter bottom drain to allow the air out until the bowl fills the close it quickly

That is not prefilling.I open the filter bottom drain to allow the air out until the bowl fills the close it quickly

Are you familiar with diesel engine fuel supply?
Without exception, there must be diesel and only diesel in the entire supply line. Neither the feed pump nor the injection pump can drive the air out.
Therefore, as air will enter when you open the system, you need to bleed the system by opening it at the filter base and pump manually or let gravity fill it until diesel without air bubbles comes out, close the bleed screw and continue to the far end (loosen the nut on the pipe on the injectors one by one) and pump the fuel pump lever until diesel comes out without air bubbles.
Since you've put in a new empty element, you need to pump quite a lot. You can alleviate this by pre-filling the filter before fitting it.
I've heard of people mounting them with wingnuts, then you can turn them upside down and fill through the drain. How do you prefill a 296 filter and bottom bowl, I think it is not possible.
How can that be? Its a very funny filter can if that is the case. There are holes in the top and the bottom of it I hope?diesel came out of the bleed screw after a short while, but the bowl remained empty.
I too suspect it is the wrong element. Are you sure you have the correct filter element. There are some that do not have holes top and bottom...albeit that they fit perfectly...
Was gonna say exactly this.Bin it and fit a Racor 500 type.Far far better and easier to use than the CAV type.
Or as in the this case, you can see the airlock, which might have come as an unpleasant surprise with a different filter?A benefit of the glass bowl, is that you can spot any water contamination.
Shouldn't have to do that.Don't pump the fuel though, suck it through with a pela type pump on the breather screw.
