224 still not in water..still pongy petrol..but now, can't get correct oil seals for prop shaft on 290 sterndrive. The official part number has been checked by 2 dealers incl VolSpec and there's only 2 types..the duo or single prop. Mine's single.
We even measured the new seals to check we hadn't got the duo prop's.
Oh sorry, I forgot to tell you the problem, I'm so pissed off.....
The problem is that the seals are too big for the shaft by quite a margin. The part number has been double checked. It's even the same for the 280s...so the diameter of the shaft can't have changed.
Help before I go out and buy a Macgregor 26x then all I've got to worry about is strings and rag....

If you still have the old ones. Take them round to your local bearing/oil seal shop. Try Yellow pages under engineering or whatever. Bearings and oil seals are nearly all standard stuff and much much cheaper from a specialist shop.

No one can force me to come here-----------

As haydn says go to the people in the know. I use Mercury bearings and Seals in Ewell surrey. Just give them all the numbers stamped on the old ones and they can match them. Oils seals from volvo £23 each, but only £4 from mercury. They have branches all over the place.

Wha'dya mean "I'm always playing with this engine" its the only way to get it to run!
