My port 280b outdrive is very difficult to get in reverse, so much so that at times you have to use two hands on the stick and it shows some reluctance to get out once you get it in. It goes in and out of forwards quite smoothly.

What would be the chief culprits causing this problem?

Cheers.

Had this on mine several yrs ago, faulty cable, pushes out of the outer cable for forward, ok back to neutral but has to go inside the outer cable for reverse any wear or damage makes this very difficult

When you say "outer cable" do you mean the plastic covering of the cable itself?

On the end of the outer cable (plastic cover) on the outdrive end is a metal sleeve which the inner cable slides in and out of depending which gear you select. Damage can cause the inner cable not to slide in when selecting reverse
