2016 Scuttlebutt Cherbourg Cruise

Jarrow Lily has had a 1 month 900NM shakedown since we got her and is performing as expected. No fuel filter changes for almost 60hrs of engine use so hopefully the dirty tank issue is behind us.

First Mate is getting the hang of manouvering her around, even getting her in stern first into finger berths three times without too much trouble.

Lets hope there are no shoreside critics watching on the Friday when we arrive in Cherbourg.................................

" ......stern first into finger berths....."

I hope 'stern first' isn't compulsory? That is expecting a lot from a Hillyard (and her skipper) :)

No, of course it is not compulsory. We bought our Island Packet SP Cruiser for one very important reason.

My knees are pretty shot, First Mate has a bad hip. The new boat, when berthed stern to is a doddle to step off its swim platforn onto the pontoon-no climbing, which has affected our enjoyment of sailing for a couple of years now.

You dont think we would have spent all that dosh just to show off going into finger berths stern first do you?

Actually, it is compulsory

Colin - stop winding people up!

I berth stern to so that we can step off boat easy through rear access platform/gate it also helps access for afternoon pontoon party.

There are plenty of helpful people to take your ropes if requested. I usually manage to cock it up quite successfully on my own but as I am leaving the boat to drive back to portugal and crew will be bringing it back to UK I will probably let one of them do it for practice as my berth in Poole can be a bitch with a diagonal cross tide and possible cross wind.

Has anyone been able to offer "weustace" a berth yet?

Thanks guys. My earlier post was a bit 'tongue in cheek' with aim of bumping the 'Cherbourg 2016' thread but I did check up on a few images of Cherbourg Port de Plaisance after Colin's post!

In cherbourg there is the river side of Pontoon Q where you can berth alongside if difficult to manoeuvre in addition to a long pontoon by the marina office. Both tend to be used by larger boats but no rules are imposed.

After refurbishment the finger pontoons are slightly larger and more substantial but still narrower than most UK ones

Here is some info on the harbour/marina:

When did they start requesting a call n Ch9 to ge a berth? I'm sure last time I went we just pitched up, found a berth and then went to the office.
I don't know - I've always done the same as you. Even turning up at the office and saying, "We're somewhere on P, I don't know exactly where" was never a problem.

Take care, last year I accepted a helping hand and ended up in the water 'cos the helpful guy, to whome I'd passed a rope with a bowline already tied, just took a turn round a cleat. I leant on the bow to adjust the rope on the foredeck and that's when I discovered it wasn't firmly attached to the pontoon.

Re departure -- I'm also leaving from Portsmouth, but generally kick off Friday from the Needles end if the wind is in the SW. It makes about a 20 degree difference to the destination's opening bearing.

Depending on wind, if SW, I may even choose to depart from the Needles on Friday morning as well, even though home port is Chichester. Would transit the Solent Thursday afternoon/evening.

For anyone leaving from Poole on Friday morning, last year a few of us met up for food and drinks in a pub on the Quay on Thursday night and by arriving at the Marina about 8ish and leaving early we were only charged for 2 short stays which worked out cheaper than a full night stay. We're going to be there again this time if anyone wants to join us.
