2016 Scuttlebutt Cherbourg Cruise

For all the newbee's.

About 2 weeks before the date I start to prepare a spreadsheet listing such details that you are happy to share. I request participants to PM me with their details (not those that have attended before if details not changed).

To distribute the final spreadsheet I need your private e mail address.

Details I include are:-
Forum name, actual name, boat name, boat type, tel mobile number, how many on board (for dinner at YC and I also need to know any veggies), departure port, departure date and approx. time.

To get the berthing discount I only forward to the marina a list of the boat names.

I will post the YC menu later to keep this thread live.

Although I'd love to come along, I don't yet quite have the confidence to take my own boat across (I think a winter refit (new standing rigging etc) is required before she's in proper offshore sailing rig). I'm not quite sure if this is the place to ask, but if anyone is after a crew member and would be willing to have me along, I would greatly appreciate it if you would send me a PM so we can discuss it further.

I took Day Skipper a couple of years ago and have clocked up roughly 700nm in total; reasonably competent daylight watch keeper but very little night experience to date. Significant dinghy sailing experience gives an appreciation of the importance of sail trim, even on a cruiser! Reasonable understanding of navigation etc and hoping to have completed SRC exam by end of August. Non-smoking student—hopefully not without a sense of humour.

There are usually a few spare berths available. I think I am as usual oversubscribed at present unfortunately but will monitor the situation.

I've just discovered that we now can't come on the cross channel jaunt as Pete has to take The Boy up to Bristol to start university on the Sunday. We're both gutted, were really looking forward to it.

I have a solution.....

Buy The Boy a train ticket. And ask him to put the keys through the letter box as he leaves for the station.

It is called "tough love". you've got to be cruel to be kind. :)

From struggling to find crew I now seem to have three, so that will be four of us for supper at the club.

I totally love this plan! But the fella is determined to take his boy for his first trip to uni. I understand, it's an important time, and Bristol is a cool place. We're both sad not to be coming on the cruise BUT there will be more cruises to get involved in.

And next time we'll be sailing our 'new' S&S 34

Have a great time, everyone :)

Let him have a week living out of a suitcase then take all his gear down the next weekend. That way you miss the crush!

(Daughter went to Bristol and nephew is there now. Both found it cool!)

Okay then, I'll ask "the question" this year: has anyone seen a long range weather forecast?

;);)

Yes, I have:

It will get light in the morning and dark at night. If the sun shines it will be warm, if not cool. If it doesn't rain it will be dry and if the wid doesn't blow it will be still.

Hope that helps with the planning :encouragement:

"UK Outlook for Tuesday 30 Aug 2016 to Tuesday 13 Sep 2016:
Through the end of August and until mid-September, we are most likely to see this changeable pattern continue across the British Isles. This should give periods of rain or showers interspersed with drier and brighter conditions. The wettest weather is most likely across north-western areas, with the best of the drier, sunnier conditions likely to be in the southeast. There should be some warm days, especially in the south, but temperatures will likely average out close to normal overall through this period."

No mention of the wind though.

Please excuse my temerity in reposting, but for the attention of anybody who didn't see this at the time:
