2005 Marina charges

I'm dreading this years hike in my mooring charges. Last year he bumped it up by 90 pence a week.

Bluidy Scandalous!! /forums/images/icons/mad.gif

Not knocking it Brendan, 'cos I'm one of those (perhaps unusual) types that happens to love others around me enjoying their boating. You are right, it can be very quiet, especially midweek, when we are more likely to be out - nevertheless, many places such as Newtown Creek, Yarmouth and Bembridge can become pretty choked on weekends, and trying to fight your way out of Southampton Water past the Hamble on a nice Saturday can be fun!! Personally, I love the whole area, and have no desire for those isolated anchorages that some crave for.

I know you aren't knocking it, otherwise you wouldn't stay there with the rest of us, just the general comments that get bandied around

The Solent

Different tastes... it's the main reason I go nowhere near the Solent. We go sailing to get away from everybody else. I am no more emotionally/socially attached to my mooring than I am to a car park spot in town.

Don't know where you got your numbers from Peter, but I'm in Brixham with 10.2 metres and I paid about £3100 this year and was further quoted £4600 for a 14.2m vessel (which I didn't buy).

Just to say, you are quoting monthly rates here, not annual.

As for charging £53,865 pa at Hythe for a 9.5 metre boat, I don't think we would get away with it...

:-)

<5.6 percent.......more than double the inflation rate. >

where do they get these inflation figures?

my mooring charge goes up by 10%

i've just had a letter from jewsons to say that most basic building materials are going up by 8-20% in the new year. it sounds to me as though the inflation statistics are from cloud cuckoo land (or have they translated them into dollars?)

and in France:-

Manche around £1450
Bretagne around £1100
Vendée between £350 - £1200.

All for pontoon berths.

Why are Brits such supine, whinging suckers?

Nothing will change until the marina owners find thier customers are no longer interested.

<you could vote with your feet> Great idea in principle Charles, but I don't have to tell you that's not practical There are around 7500 marina berths on the south Coast from Chichester to Lymington, all being charged at premium rates (because it's the area an awful lot of people want to be). So, if a large majority got together and voted with their feet, then what? There are not many moorings available in the area (if any), and I can hear the screams from the East Coast, Wales and even Scotland, if 5000 boats all descended on their sailing area!! Then again, we could all go to France, causing a shortage over there - how long before the French see their opportunity to raise their prices to UK levels,

On the other hand, if even a sizeable handful of brave souls decided to leave in protest, so what?? They would not even make a dent in the demand, and they would be left floundering with nowhere to berth.

As I see it, only a major recession in the UK boating "industry" (as has indeed happened before, and could be sparked again by the red diesel concession being removed) with a resultant lack of boats wishing to berth somewhere will change the pricing structure.

I'm really really really sorry for this:

1040€ for a 9-11m box in Jachtaven Terneuzen on the Westerscheld.

No pricechange from last year.

Are sexual favours included in the berthing price of a south coast berth? Because for the price you guys are paying, you are definitely being sh@fted.

Just got them off the MDL website. Maybe the prices they show on the Web are not what they charge but thats where I got them!

Regards.

Peter.
