Thinking of going back to the world of small RIB's just for pootling about / tender.

Going to look at one with an '05 Evinrude ETec 90 (fresh water use)

Anyone have one? Anything to look out for? I've asked on the rib.net forums but thought i'd also ask here.

I have run various e tecs
Currently we have 4 in the Fleet
The oldest is 2006, the newest are a pair of 250's which are now just about 'run in'
Working very well on a Ribtec 9 metre, trips and stuff
For those that don't know they have a unique (for outboards) system of lubrication
In that the 'lube' does not 'enter' through the fuel system
Through the cranckase (bottom end) instead
Therefore there is no contamination in the combustion chamber which is the norm with traditional 2 strokes
Hence no smokey starts or smokey cloud when hitting the throttle/throttles
Alt, if you research and or search the Ribnet Forai you will find some conflicting reports as to the 'why's and wherefores' of said Lumps
Just like any Forum!!
Prior to the 'e tec' generation Evinrude came out with another ground breaking model
The 'Ficht' or a similar name/spelling, named after its Inventor I believe
This 'thing' caused much consternation and for some time quiite damaged the Evinrude/ Johnson Brand
'Anything to look out for' you mention
It is important to know the motor has been run using the correct Lube
Because of the way they are oiled/lubed, the normal TCW3 graded oil does not have the additives that these motors use
A lap top/ computer diagnostic check would be the way forward from a 'Teccy' who has the correct kit/software etc
If you buy the 'correct' oil it is dammed expensive
We found this out
But there is an alternative
More of that again some time
So, all in all they are bloody great units imho
I did a trip around Anglesey a couple or three years ago in a Friends 6 metre Osprey rib with a 90 on the blunt end
Quiet engine and only used 1.5 galls an hour. 80 mile trip roughly (if I remember) which we did in 4 hours which included 'leisure breaks' and searching for the corkscrew for the Rioja, not that I would ever condone drinking alkihol whilst motorboating!:D

There were definite problems with the early versions Alt, but if this 90 has survived the last twelve years, assume with regular use, it should be fine.
I have had workboats in the past and used the Etec 90's, some good, some not. If they are going to fail, they will within the first 100 hours or so.

Turns out the damn thing sold within 24 hours of ad being posted, looks like it was a bargain.

I'll continue shopping :)
