Hi Guys

We currently own a Humber 40 and are selling and thinking of buying a pearl 43 built in 2003.. One we are looking at was built in 2003 then it had new engines and these do not match Boat docs - Serial No start with 86.

Any Ideas as to why a new boat in 2003 would need new TAM D63P replacement engines ? And a bit concerned that the Docs do not match or had been upgraded to show when they were refitted and by whom..

They engines are TAM D63P and survey shows 380 hours each The port engine would not start; it appears to be a problem with the ‘EC’ control with the red warning light flashing. An engineer managed to start the port engine but the engine controls would not work.

We think it used to be in Port Solent

Any ideas or thoughts gratefully received.

Most likely replacement under warranty due to a fault, but to have both engines faulty is unlucky.

Of course there are other reasons why engines might be replaced. I’d maybe check the hull around the p brackets and rudder sticks fircsigns of repair.

The numbers could be traced to a warranty claim made by possibly , dealer, owner etc that’s why both engines were replaced or sometimes a poor installation can cause series issues whereby they were replaced.

As for the EC controls by Volvo sadly these are now obsolete with very little parts stock left by Volvo worldwide , I know the computer boards and control box are no longer available. , should you encounter a problem your looking at swapping the whole system to a ZF mathers make at a cost of around 5 to 6 Thousand , there is obviously a fault if there is no start, no shift and a red light on.

Just make sure it hasn't previously sunk!

Call Pearl ( Ian Smallridge) and ask. If it was anything to do with them he will probably remember as I cant believe engine swaps of both are that frequent.

Also Volvo can be helpful if you can find a phone number for them. I did many years ago and seem to remember it was very hard to find a human - but that may have changed.

Thanks - Thought had crossed our minds re had the boat been sunk? No obvious signs BUT of course its now 15 years on so would have been made sound by now
