Hi Simon,

I believe International suggest circa 5 years at least, but as another poster has stated, it can be much longer or much less depending on the quality of the work, it's use, exposure (probably last a shorter time in the Med. for example) wear and tear etc. I 2-potted my previous boat (with International) 17 years ago. It's never been touched since and looks almost as good today as it did then. The new owners keep it cleaned and polished and sail hundreds of miles each year. We hand painted it using five coats, 'wet and dryed' between each coat and washed down, before the next coat.

I am also just about to paint my boat and will be using 2 pot, either International or Blakes, though intend spray application this time. I'm tempted to use Awlgrip but haven't got the details yet and I understand that this paint has a much longer life and better gloss retention. It's dearer, but then I guess you get what you pay for ....... sometimes!

Best of luck with your project.

Good sailing!

Simon,

Jerryat is right. It could be 5, 10 or 20 years! So many variables. Two pack is the best and most durable you can get.

Hi Jerryat,

thanks did not considder how many coats, are you going to put five coats on again, is spray painting going to give you a thicker or thinner coat per application?

I've got no idea, there are so many different Gell coats!! I'm saying that it is the best paint you can get for this type of application.

May I suggest that you contact some of the manufactureres to get detailed information on this? Most of them have websites

Hi Simon,

The spray coats are much thinner and it will therefore require more to achieve a given final thickness, though I am not attempting to get the same as my earlier efforts! I haven't decided on the actual scheme yet, and want to talk to the preferred supplier to decide whether, for example, I need a primer/undercoat etc (I'm painting white on a white gelcoat) or can apply the 2-pot direct.

I suggest you might like to do similarly re the paint scheme you will need, as your requirements may differ. I found International's tech people very helpful last time and no doubt the other manufacturers offer the same advice and support. This was particularly useful with regard to temperature and humidity info, both of which can make or break an otherwise good job.

I assume you have picked up copies of International's and Blake's paint booklets which are available free of charge in most chandlers.

Hope this helps.

Good sailing!

Jerry
