2 new seacoks 600EUR a piece, is this right?

Would this yard be a bit west of Union Hall and east of Schull, by any chance?:)

I suspect the yard is in cork harbour where I'm based. If its the one I'm thinking of its not the first horror story regarding bills that I've heard from there.I do all my own maintenance/project work tbh if I had to pay prices like that I simply couldn't afford to keep a boat.

I have had the misfortune of leaving a yacht in a yard over winter in Cork a few years ago and got quotes for doing various jobs on the yacht while it was there. The quotes were ridiculously over priced and I ended up doing most of the jobs myself. Also the yard would not permit outside contractors so competition was excluded. Renovated a yacht in Devon last year - boatyard did an excellent job and never felt ripped off. Will get a bow thruster installed next Spring and already feel a trip over the Irish Sea will be warranted.

I can probably guess what yard that was, I was ripped off in a yard in Cork too after leaving the boat in for a few years without a quote, found a better cheaper one that is very relaxed and much better run. and you can do your own work with out a problem. pm me if you want to know where.

Absolute ripoff. I changed 5 in one day working alone between beers this year. Only way those hours could be accurate is if extensive work needed to dismantle and reassemble internal joinery or move an engine, which is the case on a minority of boats.

If you have possession of the boat then I would not pay. Get a surveyor or fitter in to give an opinion then take whatever route you can under Irish trading standards law.

Irish & trading standards ?? That's a foreign concept indeed...

As a comparison, I paid Ardfern to fit a new bow water tank filler point to my boat last year ... I had a busted wrist which just about let me sail but certainly wasn't up to fitting work. The bill for removing the old, seized filler, enlarging the hole, fitting and sealing the new filler and connecting up inside was fifteen quid. Plus VAT.

Ardfern's yard prices are always very reasonable and they do a good job. They charged me £3k for hauling out, shoring up, remove rudder, and shaft, replace cutlass bearing, machine shaft to take Kiwi prop, supply and fit prop, fit Centaflex coupling, replace 2 Blakes seacocks and free off 4 others, relaunch.

If asking for a quote for work and any yard won't give one, then they should at least be able to give a 'maximum' or worst case price. Any yard that advised that it could take up to 30hours to change 2 seacocks is not likely to get the job....

Took me 5 hours last year. First time I had done it and one of the seacocks refused to come off the through hull fitting; I would expect the yard to do that in about an hour.

I always ask the yard for a price and agree a maximum that I will pay before letting them loose on the boat.

Thats a rather sweeping statement.I have had dealings with many companies here and have been treated fairly and at reasonable cost. There are times when you come across ripoffs like the ops as I'm sure happens in the UK and other countries, could be something to do with the notion all people who own boats are wealthy and will pay up.

I'm very happy with the standard of work and the prices at Port Bannatyne, but alas so is everyone else and the queues are enormous. I'd certainly consider having future work done at Ardfern, particularly because it could let me split a trip "outside" into two work-friendly sections.

I recently had a quote of £904.00 plus VAT from a well known Cornish yard to replace a Nasa through hull fitting access very easy just knock the old one out clean off old sealant and refit. I did the job in less than three parts of an hour!

I've since commissioned another yard to do a partial re-fit, engine out etc etc so the first yard has lost an job worth a small fortune.

A well known East Coast yard, tried for £750 plus vat to do one.

Admittedly they cut the old one out and put a proper flush one in and did the surrounding fibreglass work, fairing it in etc.

They made a lovely job of it but knocking on a grand.....next time I'll get a quote first and not just say 'fine just do it,'![/QUOTE

A well known Marina on the east coast charged me £750 to replace 6 seacocks, thought that a reasonable price as two were quite difficult to access
