Hello fellow motorboaters. This is my first post apart from one to the fuel forum. I have in the past few weeks bought a Channel Island 22 with a single 140 hp lump. Is there any fellow owners of Channel Islands out there? Does anyone know of a product that I can use to freshen up the pram hood also bring up the white topsides of the boat?

Re: Hello!

Hi, and welcome. A Channel Islands 22 eh? I don't know the boat. Is it 22 feet or 22 metres? I imagine it's feet. Or perhaps metres, and the 140 hp is the generator? haha, sorry, xmas joke.

Can you get the hood off and send it to dry cleaners? Nopt worth spending too much on it as you can getta new one for 100-200 quid see
www.saundersfootautomarine.co.uk/prambroch.htm

As for topsides. Well, a whole book could be written. First, your life is short, so don't spend too long on it. Second, spend a few quid to make youirself feel as tho you've made a reasonable effot. Abrasive creams not a fab idea. I used bilge cleaner, has a mild acid, and not abrasive, and quite powerful: i used it on the seats with fabulous sparkling brand-new looking results, although everyone who sat on it since has got bleach marks on their bum, and our clothes fell to bits. Much better to spend the money on beer, so you care less about the topsides. Also, get a berth where you can't see the topsides. med stern mooring means you only have to do the stern platform.

Good luck, and keep posting!

Re: 1st Post - Hello too

Hang in there, the board is fun - be prepared to be flamed however! And rember to give as good as you get.

Theres a car product called Renovo which sorts out convertible hoods - it's about £50 a bottle but lasts for ages. I'm not sure how long it would last on a marine hood. I will be getting some and giving it a try.

As for deck cleaning - I have no idea, I've only owned a boat for a month or so and the rain cleans it for me.

Cheers,

Barry

Welcome Higgy, hope you have fun here. Don't know anything about your boat, but I think Longjohnsilver's got one so maybe he'll post a reply for you later when he wakes up from his alcohol induced sleep.

Re cleaning the boat, can you take the hood off and give it a good scrub with fairy liquid type detergent, then I've had good results with Starbrite's vinyl cleaner, but get the worst off first.

Re cleaning the topsides, I'd do a pressure was first, then a good shampoo again another Starbrite product, then cutting compound, I use Farecla G3 with a polishing machine, then finally 2 coats of Starbrite's Teflon polish. No I don't work for Starbrite, just found their products pretty good andf refreshingly expensive so that you think at that price they must be good. Though they don't seem to sell anything to make your engine go faster\burn less fuel.

Of course after doing all this work, two weeks later it looks the same as before, but then that's half the fun of having a boat.

Re: 1st Post - Hello too

Easiest way to keep the hood and decks clean is to get the wife to do it. This arrangement came about when she started to tell me how to do the job. Since then boat gets cleaned without any effort on my part. Unfortunatly she still hasn't passed any comment on how I should service the engines. But there is still time.

Good luck and keep posting

Re: Longjohn (hic) silver

Could be a bit optimistic there Byron, I don't think he'll have finished all that Duty Free booze by then.

I used to own a CI 22 with a Mermaid 140. What's your boats name?

Excellent little craft, I still miss it now.

Have just read the slanderous remarks below, don't believe a word they say, I have hardly made any impression on my imported pile of French booze.

Does your CI 22 have the rope fendering and where will you keep her?

I always use Jiff cream on the white topsides, seems to work well, but you must wash it off thoroughly and then polish it with something like Mer, much cheaper than marine polish. The canopy was always a problem, leaked like a sieve!

I now have a CI32, bigger but not better!

Re: LJS - Sober?? Huh

See Higgy, we told you he'd be druunk when he replies. Easy pointers to guage LJS's state of sobriety are

1. No useful inputs made. Suggests using devon clotted cream to clean your boat
2.Denies being drunk and claims not to have made an imprssion on cellar. Everyone knows boats don't have cellars.
3. Accuses us, who know him well, of slanderous remarks. If he was sober he'd know that a remark can't be slanderous if true.
4. Is trying to get a free drink out of you, hence his request for your boat's name. DON'T tell him. He'll just turn up unnanounced and uninvited and drink the boat dry, then fall over the side when he says, "see I told you I missed the CI 22"

I think Byron's advice was best. Wait till well into New Year to expect any coherent response from LJS.

Re: blimmin Jif!

You're surely confusing you're drinks with the cleaning materials! Add malibu to the jif for the wife, but don't use it on the boat, or it'll get all dull and crap. or mebbe higgy's bort yer old boat?

Re: blimmin Jif!

You must have hit the drambuie hard last night Matt (see you've finally got the leopard up and running), nowt wrong with Cif cream, keeps the boat clean AND you will get a good shine if you use Mer afterwards.

Re: blimmin Jif!

Wouldn't recommend Jif all the time but I know one Fairline dealer who occasionally uses it on their new boats before delivery.

Also I helped a mate Jif his 10 year old and it came up really nicely.

I cant really believe im doing this but, I do agree with LJS. I used to use Jif & Mer on my old boat and on a 10 year old hull it worked wonders. I dont think im brave enough to use it on my new shiny hull though.

With regards to the canopy a lot depends on the material. Fairy liquid works as well as anything.

Good luck

Re: cif

why is it funny that they call it "cif"? They can't call it gelcoat scrapy scrapy ripping fluid, now can they?

Also, it's "Kif". Not "syph", and stop giggling with your mates, you! - Ok! I mean with your *friends* then!

Re: curses - TimE??

after a little investigation, it seems that cif is indeed pronounced as you say. And it would seem a bit cheetah ish to me, tho much more stylish than the crap moggy I had before TimE sorted me out. Do leopards bother running around a lot?

Re: curses - TimE??

Leopards do run around a lot. In fact they have a lot more stamina than Cheetahs. Leopards are more yer middle distant runners, so can last for quite a while. Whereas yer Cheeah does very, very, fast and it's all over and done with quickly - now I'm getting out of here 'cos I can feel an analogy coming on ;-)
