Re: 1st boat advice please, is a Bavaria 40 Vision OK
I will be very new to boating and am not taking chances with the keel, if I stay near the middle then in my mind that eliminates (as much as possible) the risk of grounding it. Some people may think that is daft, but I prefer to err on the side of caution, I have looked at a map and the only thing that could get in the way is the Ascension Island, but I will take a GPS with me so hopefully spot that before I hit it /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I am making kit list, and may well share it nearer the time just in case anyone thinks I may have forgotten something.
I have bought a knife and some spare fenders so far, I also bought some rope and a tool box from Halfords (still to choose the tools yet), so you can see I am making a start.

You will need:
1. “this way up” indicators on the sails
2. Shark replant
3. It’s an option on the Bav’s but well worth the extra money for an upwind button. Press it and she’ll sail directly into wind. It’s all to do with the hydrodynamics of the keel.
4. Twin D6 Volvos

What's that a map off? it's in a foreign language, looks like Portugal.
Anyway I have got Europe auto route express and don't see any coastline like that, I may get the American version as well so that I can recognise coastline's when I am approaching there, I know Florida is easy to spot because of the pointy bit at the bottom and the gay parades that go on there /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi Pete,
Sounds an excellent idea to me. I am considering doing something similar but am getting a bit confused with the best time to depart (trade winds and sea current) Zoe would be reluctant to 'set sail' in the onset of winter which is when I believe the best sailing conditions are expected. Maybe would could go in convoy?
With regards to training, I'm sure a couple of guys of our caliber could learn on the job. I've studied in great detail a working model sailing catamaran I bought Sam whilst in Yarmouth recently. It all looks very basic with just a few ropes to pull and once out of the Solent it'll be a straight line across the Atlantic. I've been told the shortest route is using something called a rhumb line but it looks curved to me and we all know that the shortest route is in a straight line and not in a curve.

Kev, you came across as a good solid person who would be good in a tough situation, however you seem to be ahead of the game having worked on models, I have just done a search for models on google and came up with some very interesting 'strings'. nothing like you were talking about. I will just check these ones out and be back later. By the way I am down at the boat practicing my inverted manoevers and EVC throttle back tickle touches, after that I will spend the rest of the day rubbing down, filling and gel coating.
Anyway, back to the last question, yes I'm up for it, as for the winter bit, don't worry, we can just go 'full sails' up and get down to the warm stuff, I reckon if we averaged 27 knts, we could get to South America in 2 weeks /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif (that is without any of the zig zagging stuff)

I take it that Mrs GC1 wont do the ironing or cooking then? Suppose if you got a bigger Bavaria (42 Match) then there would be room for a cook, cleaner, chauffeur and a person to catch the fish whilst you dont look..... Take some araldite with you for the occassional DIY Keel repair!
Re: 1st boat advice please, is a Bavaria 40 Vision OK
Have you considered the rather nifty idea of getting some fellow forumites to sail the wonderful Bavaria Vision 40 to your chosen destination?
The advantages are that you could then fly to said same place. That way you can concentrate on the important things in life - not the washing, ironing, cooking and flappy sail adjustments that are the bane of a sailors life...
This has a hidden benefit too you are able to keep working, as such you are then in a position to reap the financial rewards of the crew and skipper who are delivering your yacht to your ports of call which in turn will pay handsomely for your first class travel or private jet.
If you opt for the private jet you may not have so much left over after the delivery crew have payed up...
Just a few ideas to mull over...
You could even make a start on this forum, perhaps an 'add' for solent cruising - just to get them interested from there it'll be plain sailing ...
Re: 1st boat advice please, is a Bavaria 40 Vision OK
Perhaps all the posters who have ever expressed an adverse opinion about a Bav could go as non paid crew.....it could be considered missionary work...we either lose our lives or end up as complete and zealous converts, defending Bavs to the death, ready to shoot down in flames anyone with an unkind word to say....
Re: 1st boat advice please, is a Bavaria 40 Vision OK
You could not even go across the Solent without putting your crew's lifes in danger.. Imagen the lifes you would put at risk if you ventured out of the Solent or Medway.
Why not try traveling round the word via pasenger ferries and highways living in your boat but keeping it on the trailer?
